Earlier this week it was claimed that Liverpool - along with Chelsea - held a “concrete interest” in signing Morgan Rogers.

The 23-year-old England international has been with Aston Villa since joining from Middlesbrough in February 2024.

He’s gone from strength to strength since then - with the playmaker’s form in the Premier League and Champions League marking him out as a target for top teams.

Although Villa’s PSR situation was pretty dire last summer Unai Emery’s club managed to hold onto Rogers through the transfer window.

But their ability to hold onto the versatile forward looks set to be severely tested with their Champions League participation for next season now in jeopardy.

Liverpool want £100m Rogers

PSR will give way to Squad Cost Ratios (SCR) but either way it looks a certainty that the Villans will have to sell a top name in order to stave off financial problems.

A few months back they looked a certainty to secure a return to European football’s top table. But starting with a 4-1 hammering by Arsenal in December they have managed only three wins in 10 Premier League outings.

Their latest outing - on Friday night - saw Villa lose 2-0 to bottom side Wolves at Molineux. Although still third in the table Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all rapidly gaining ground on Villa.

Villa could be forced to sell Rogers

Worse still they could tumble out of the Champions League picture very soon with both Man Utd and Chelsea on the horizon.

Before the end of the season they will also play Liverpool as well as Manchester City - meaning their hopes of a return to the Champions League are rapidly fading.

That makes it all the more likely that Rogers leaves - and Liverpool will be right there for his signature.

Villa reportedly value their star man at £100m but the Reds may well get him for less than that if Villa are in any kind of money bother.

Their form has tailed off and that spells trouble. Liverpool must capitalise on this opportunity.
