Liverpool sent scouts to watch reported transfer target Viktor Gyokeres this weekend as he bagged a brace for Ruben Amorim's Sporting CP.

The Reds have been regularly linked with a move for Sporting boss Amorim in recent weeks as they continue their hunt for Jurgen Klopp's successor, but they have also been showing a keen interest in Gyokeres after his sensational debut campaign in Lisbon.

The Swede made the switch from Coventry City last summer and has scored at an astonishing rate since moving to Portugal. He netted twice in Sporting's 3-0 win over Vitoria de Guimaraes on Sunday evening, strikes which take his tally to 38 goals and 16 assists in 45 appearances this season.

It appears that Liverpool managed to get a closer look at Gyokeres' brilliance at the weekend too, with club representatives reportedly in attendance during Sporting's emphatic victory.

LIVERPOOL WATCH VIKTOR GYOKERES SCORE TWICE

According to HITC, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Sporting's 3-0 victory and Gyokeres was the club's 'main reason' for attending the match in the Portuguese capital.

Gyokeres grabbed a double during the win, netting either side of half-time to add to his incredible goalscoring record, meaning he likely made a positive impression on Liverpool's recruitment staff.

The Reds are expected to improve their forward line in some capacity this summer and Gyokeres would certainly be a fantastic addition, even if his £86m release clause would be somewhat off-putting.

However, the player's agent has admitted that his client would find it difficult to stay at Sporting should manager Amorim leave this summer, potentially offering Liverpool an advantage in the race for Gyokeres should the Portuguese coach end up at Anfield.

Liverpool have also been linked with centre-back Goncalo Inacio and holding midfielder Morten Hjulmand, both of whom featured in Sunday's triumph. While Gyokeres was the primary target on the club's scouting mission, they will have undoubtedly taken a look at a number of Sporting's talented stars - including Amorim, of course.

Sporting are now ten points clear of Lisbon rivals Benfica at the top of the table with four games to play in the Primeira Liga, although their foes do have a game in hand. Amorim's men also find themselves in the Taca de Portugal final as they chase a domestic double.
