Liverpool reportedly emerge as potential suitors for 21-year-old Middlesbrough defender
Liverpool are interested in Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, according to The Northern Echo, as cited by Anfield Edition's Twitter account.
The report states that the Reds have emerged as potential suitors for the 21-year-old. The report further adds that Spence, who has spent most of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest, could be available for around £15 million this summer.
The Englishman has played well for Forest this season. The full-back has averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.95 across the 2021-22 Championship campaign.
Anfield Watch Verdict
Spence appears to be a promising young talent. As we have already pointed out, the right-back is performing well in the second best division of English football.
Back in January, Nottingham Forest came up against Arsenal at the City Ground. Former Red Stephen Warnock was analysing the game for the BBC.
The 40-year-old was certainly impressed with what he saw from Spence.
As quoted by Nottingham Forest News, Warnock told Match of the Day the following: “Djed Spence, the right wing-back. Middlesbrough fans will be wondering why he’s not playing for them. He was outstanding tonight. His ability to step onto the game, to know when to press…it was a key feature.
“He outbattled [Gabriel] Martinelli and he surprised him. Huge performance from him.”
The aforementioned comments further highlight that Spence is promising prospect. Therefore, we would like to see the club make a move for him.
Spence could prove to be a solid backup option to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Scouser has been a mainstay in Jurgen Klopp's side for five years.
Therefore, it might be difficult to convince Spence to sign for Liverpool. Not too many players are happy being the reserve option, especially when they are young and promising.
But, only time will tell if Liverpool and Spence are to cross paths.
