Liverpool ready to sign England international
Liverpool are reportedly looking at another attacker to bolster Arne Slot's options.
The injury to Alexander Isak has drawn attention to the club's lack of depth in the no.9 position. For the foreseeable future Slot will have just Hugo Ekitike to choose from as an out and out no.9.
This is going to have to change if Liverpool want to compete on all fronts and become a team successful in every department and area of the pitch.
There needs to be a back-up option and an alternative to Ekitike and Isak. Someone who isn't an academy player like Jayden Danns or Will Wright with very little experience.
For that, Liverpool are going to have to enter the transfer market. But who they target has to be financially viable and not someone who would break the bank.
According to Ekrem Konur this could end-up becoming Ivan Toney with the club seeking a long-term no.9 option and being long-time admirers of the former Brentford star and England international.
Toney is a proven goal-scorer in the Premier League and he's been playing in Saudi Arabia for Ah-Ahli over the course of the last year or so.
This season he has 17 goal contributions in 20 games for his club, and in total he has 43 goals and 10 assists in just 63 Ah-Ahli games, highlighting just how prolific he is.
With this being a World Cup year, Toney will be interested in returning to England given the fact that the Three Lions don't really have a lot of depth in the attacking department behind Harry Kane.
Toney could be an excellent choice but he needs to be playing at a much higher level in order to warrant a call-up.
Liverpool could give him the platform to do that.
But there are some question marks. Toney is going to be turning 30-years-old, so while Konur reports that the club see him as a long-term target, it's moot how long-term he could be as an option for Liverpool.
He is a bit of a late bloomer so perhaps he may have more longevity in his career but that isn't guaranteed.
There's also the question of his wages. He's on a lot of money in Saudi Arabia. Would he consider a wage-cut to come back to the Premier League?
It's the only way Liverpool could sign him. There's no way the Reds would be willing to sanction so much money for a 29-year-old back-up striker.
This is why he feels like a two or three-year option rather than a properly long-term solution to Liverpool's attack. But
