Liverpool ready major transfer in reaction to contract
Liverpool are reportedly planning another 'major' transfer. It's a reaction to contract confusion.
Liverpool have some contract confusion right now. Is Ibrahima Konate staying at the club?
The Frenchman’s deal expires at the end of the season and it’s been a year-long worry that he’ll depart for free. He’s been in talks with Liverpool for well over a year now, in fact.
And the closer we get to the end of the deal, the less sure anyone can be about the outcome. There are zero strong links between Konate and any other club, suggesting he’s not particularly close to leaving.
Compare the situation to last year’s contract drama. Neither Mo Salah nor Virgil van Dijk were linked anywhere despite being low on time. They eventually stayed.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, was heavily linked with Real Madrid, eventually moving there. Konate’s situation does seem more similar to the previous pair.
But Liverpool can’t act that way. In fact, they’ve got to act the complete opposite way: that Konate is destined to leave and that a replacement is necessary.
Liverpool's next 'major' signing
Football Insider reports that Liverpool are planning to sign a centre-back as their next 'major' signing. This comes despite agreeing a deal for Jeremy Jacquet to join at the end of the campaign.
The Reds hope to follow that big-money deal with another one. Now, the only way that makes sense is if they're at least partially worried that Konate is about to abandon them.
It's difficult to believe that a 'major' new centre-back would replace Joe Gomez's place in the squad, for instance. They'd almost certainly partner Van Dijk, with a view to replacing him.
After all, Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni fill the 'other' two centre-back places. Those are the rotational options for the future - a major arrival would be for a starting role.
And that surely means Konate is off. It's the only way that spending that kind of money makes any sense.
