Liverpool preferred destination for defender who could become the best in the world

Liverpool's defence has been one of their main problems this season.

Hardly any of their players have performed to the standards expected of them with most of the Reds' defeats coming as a result of their short-comings.

Virgil van Dijk has been a fraction of his former self and, while the form of Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kerkez has started to improve over the last couple of months, they still have a lot to answer for.

These poor performances have resulted in several defenders being linked with an Anfield switch and now, one of their reported targets have actually chosen Anfield as their preferred destination.

Micky van de Ven may be a part of the worst Tottenham Hotspur team in recent memory but that doesn't mean he's a bad player.

When the centre-back plays alongside Van Dijk with the Dutch national team his quality is laid bare.

His speed, coupled with his physicality and his ability to consistently keep the ball away from danger are all some of the best things a Premier League centre-back could have.

And, the fact that Rio Ferdinand has said that he's got the potential to be one of the best defenders around proves how good he actually is.

Several teams are interested in acquiring his services this summer but, a fresh report from TEAMtalk will certainly pique the interest of Liverpool's fanbase.

"Liverpool are understood to be extremely keen on bringing Van de Ven to Anfield this summer, identifying him as a prime candidate to eventually succeed compatriot Virgil van Dijk and partner him next season," they wrote.

"His explosive pace, composure on the ball, and commanding presence align perfectly with Arne Slot’s vision.

"However, the Merseyside club are proceeding with caution due to the defender’s chequered injury record.

"Since joining Tottenham in 2023, van de Ven has battled recurring hamstring, thigh, and knee problems that have limited his availability at key moments.

"Despite these concerns, a move to Liverpool would hold immense appeal for the player.

"A self-confessed Reds supporter with family connections to the club, Van de Ven would prioritise Anfield above most other destinations.

"Sources suggest he would choose Liverpool over rivals, including Manchester United, without hesitation if both clubs table formal offers."

Although nothing is guaranteed in football, if Liverpool don't add one or two players to their ranks this summer, fans will need to start asking some serious questions.

The Reds have been utterly woeful this season and if they don't bring in some new faces to help improve things, it'll almost certainly be curtains for Arne Slot.

At the moment, the Dutchman seems likely to stay at the helm despite his underperformance but, if enough new players aren't brought in, they could end up even worse off than they currently find themselves.

Van De Ven would be an incredible signing for Liverpool as he's extremely versatile and has already got solid relationships with a lot of Liverpool's first-team squad.

He'd fit into Slot's plans seamlessly and he'd instantly improve their chances of actually adding some silverware to their trophy cabinet next term.

There's obviously no knowing whether the Anfield outfit will actually make a move for him or not but, if they do, it would be a massive statement of intent and proof that they mean business.
