The approach from the ownership hasn't been one of neglect per se, but fans are eager to see improvements made to the squad and the club's absence in the market signifies a lack of ambition in some people's eyes.

Federico Chiesa was signed at the last minute of the summer window and Giorgi Mamardashvilli won't arrive on Merseyside for another six months, meanwhile, there are positions in the squad in need of improvement.

However, one star has been linked to the club over the past few days and he plays in a position that Liverpool don't even necessarily need to recruit in. We've taken a look at why Liverpool are interested, and how Richard Hughes can make the move happen.

Liverpool want Gittens and Diaz could facilitate him

Back when he managed Feyenoord, Arne Slot played with two wingers who ran one-on-one at defenders, won their duels against opposition full-backs and carried the ball forward to dangerous positions.

Luis Diaz was a master at it during his time at Porto and during his initial six-month spell at Merseyside, he was relentless in pursuit of winning games for Liverpool. Since then, he has reigned in his approach ever so slightly, playing in a different way from when he first arrived.

Cody Gakpo, who also plays on the left-hand side, is just not that type of winger. He'll run at the opposition's defence, but he is more likely to send a cross in or dribble around the outside of the opposition's defence to get a shot off at goal from a central position.

While Slot has been left to work with the players the club already has at their disposal, he has attempted to utilise the Reds' two widemen in different ways, but neither are capable of doing what he used to implement at his old club.

Liverpool's approach for Kvicha Khvaratskehlia signified that the Reds are looking at shaking up the forward line, and the Georgian's attacking profile looked to be exactly what the Dutchman might have been looking for.

In the end, Khvaratskehlia moved to Paris Saint Germain earlier this month, but the club is now eyeing up ex-Manchester City academy graduate Jamie Gittens.

The 20-year-old Englishman is playing for Borussia Dortmund and across their endeavours in the Bundesliga and the Champions League he has notched 15 goal contributions and if he carries on his fine form, then Liverpool could ramp up their approach for him.

Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool's interest in Gittens is 'genuine' and Fabrizio Romano believes that the Reds are currently monitoring his situation before making a move.

He is already the tenth most valuable player in the German league and his stock is only set to increase the more he develops his craft and delivers at the highest level.

Luis Diaz is currently having problems negotiating a new contract with Liverpool as his current wage of £55,000 a week has remained the same since he joined the club in 2022.

His level of performance over the past few years have almost certainly been worthy of a pay rise, but nothing has come to fruition and his current deal is set to expire in 2027 so the club has an important decision to make regarding his future.

If Richard Hughes feels that it is better to cash in on the Colombian, then a spot for Gittens could open as quickly as this summer and the wage intended for the Englishman would be along the same lines as Diaz's current earnings, until he proves his quality in the Premier League.

The addition of further youth into the team would set up the club well for the years ahead and one of the world's brightest attacking talents would be playing in an environment that has allowed young players to flourish in recent times.
