Liverpool will have to weigh up whether or not to allow Federico Chiesa to join Juventus this winter.

According to Italian sources the 28-year-old is willing to take a pay cut to force through a move to his former employers during the January transfer window.

Having found first-team football hard to come by in a season and a half under Arne Slot - it would appear that Chiesa is ready to call it quits.

He never quite managed to win Slot over following his transfer from Juventus in September 2024 - for a fee that could ultimately reach £12.5m.

The Italy international has managed only one Premier League start this season and it is clear that Slot simply doesn’t trust him as much as his other attackers.

James Pearce suggests permanent deal could happen

Right now the discussion between Juventus and Liverpool is over the structure of the deal. While the Serie A giants want a loan it would seem that Liverpool are only prepared to sanction a permanent deal for a player contracted until 2028.

With Chiesa keen to break back into the Azzurri squad ahead of their FIFA World Cup playoff - the countdown is on for the clubs to reach an agreement.

A trusted Liverpool source in James Pearce is now claiming that the Premier League champions WOULD be open to offloading Chiesa - but only for a significant amount.

“Juventus want Federico Chiesa on loan but Liverpool are highly unlikely to sanction a temporary move for the Italian forward this month,” he writes in the Athletic.

“Chiesa has clocked up 21 appearances for Slot this season, and there’s no appetite to offload him, especially with Isak out at least until March and Ekitike having only recently recovered from a hamstring problem.

“For Liverpool to even consider doing business, there would need to be a significant permanent offer on the table, and they would need to be able to recruit a suitable replacement.”

End game for Chiesa at Liverpool

This is remarkably close to the language used to describe the saga around Luis Diaz last summer - with the Colombian ultimately moving to Bayern Munich for £65m.

It now appears we are reaching the endgame for Chiesa’s proposed transfer back to Juventus. Italian sources reckon the overall deal could cost the Old Lady something in the region of €15m - between a loan fee and a permanent transfer.

Earning around £150k per week on Merseyside it looks like Chiesa is prepared to make financial sacrifices to get this deal over the line.

Head coach Luciano Spalletti is of course a big fan of Chiesa having coached him for Italy and previously describing him as Italian football’s “Jannik Sinner”.

It remains to be seen if - and when Liverpool move for a replacement as suggested by Pearce particularly for the money mentioned.
