Liverpool one step closer to signing sensational 21-goal attacker

Liverpool are now one step closer to making a brilliant signing.

Liverpool’s summer transfer window has been unusually quiet so far. For a club expected to undergo a significant rebuild, the lack of movement has naturally raised questions among supporters about when the club will finally accelerate its plans.

However, there are understandable reasons why progress has been slower than expected.

The biggest factor has been the amount of change behind the scenes.

The managerial transition at the end of the season brought Andoni Iraola to Anfield, along with a new footballing philosophy, different tactical requirements and a fresh vision for how the squad should be constructed.

At the same time, there has been instability at executive level.

Michael Edwards stepped away from his position, while Richard Hughes is also preparing to depart. Changes of that scale inevitably impact recruitment processes. Decisions become more complex, priorities can shift and transfer strategies often need to be reassessed before major moves are made.

The World Cup has added another layer of difficulty.

Major international tournaments traditionally slow the market down, with players focused on their national teams and clubs often unwilling to make decisions until the competition concludes.

That creates a chain reaction across Europe, delaying negotiations and limiting available opportunities.

Liverpool were also dealt a significant blow when Yan Diomande, their preferred attacking target, chose to move to Paris Saint-Germain instead.

Losing a first-choice target is always a setback, but it is particularly frustrating when a large part of the club’s recruitment strategy has been built around securing that specific profile.

The challenge now is for Liverpool to adapt quickly and ensure a slow start does not turn into a missed opportunity.

Obviously, the biggest area that Liverpool have to fix is the right-winger position.

Andoni Iraola said in his press conference that Liverpool need to buy a winger.

With the departure of Mo Salah, having a player who won't replace him but who can come in and play that right-winger role is crucial.

That is why the Reds were so desperate to bring in Diomande.

Now they are left to look at alternative solutions. Victor Munoz can obviously be used in that role but he's been brought in to be a versatile attacking solution rather than the first choice option in that department.

On top of all of this, there's a shortage of options in the no.9 role due to Hugo Ekitike's injury.

Liverpool cannot rely on Alexander Isak alone. So Liverpool are going to have to add more depth.

And how can they do that?

Well, by targeting Ferran Torres, of course.

Torres' sweet finish against Argentina has forever made him an icon in Spain and beyond. The 26-year-old isn't just a one goal wonder though.

Torres scored 21-goals for Barcelona last season, and delivered 19 goals the season prior in all competitions. He is a proven attacker, who can play anywhere in the front three and who has a very good awareness and sense of being able to get himself into goal-scoring positions.

On top of this, he's also quick and his movement off the ball is excellent - something that would absolutely appeal to Iraola.

The biggest factor though is that he is on the move. Right now Torres has one year left on his contract at Barcelona. If the Catalans decide to extend his deal, they would have to pay an additional £7m to Manchester City, which is something Barca are not willing to do.

PSG seemed to be the front-runners for his signature but Liverpool are also in the running and a recent report could give the Reds an edge and put them one step closer to getting their target.

According to Sasha Tavolieri PSG are looking to sign Charles De Ketelaere. Now he's a very similar profile to Torres, and PSG don't need to sign both of them.

The fact that they are now looking at the Belgian must mean they are moving on from Torres and that puts Liverpool a step closer to landing the Barcelona star.
