Liverpool now favourites to land €80m Mohamed Salah replacement
Mohamed Salah has now played his final game for Liverpool, and the process of replacing him has begun.
The Egyptian King has been the talisman at Anfield for close to a decade, so finding an heir won’t be easy, but it is a task that Richard Hughes must face this summer.
Salah’s output may eventually be replaced long-term by some of the signing Liverpool have already made, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz for example, but the right-hand side of the Reds’ attack needs to be strengthened.
Several names have been linked with a Merseyside move in recent months and a deal for one is now getting closer.
Liverpool favourites to land €80m winger this summer
One player who has been linked with an Anfield switch for quite some time is Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
The 23-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar for a number of years and could finally make the switch this summer.
After a season impacted by injury, and a change in the club’s dugout, Williams is reportedly ready to leave Athletic in an €80 million (~£69m) deal.
That’s according to El Nacional, who claim that the Reds are heavy favourites to sign the Spanish international with talks already underway.
The big concern for Arne Slot’s side will be Williams’ recent struggle with injuries, having missed 17 matches this season as well as missing five games in the final month of the 2024/25 season.
The forward’s age and proven attacking prowess could lead the club to take a gamble and hope that they can work on his injury record to ensure he is consistently available.
Liverpool’s interest in Williams is long standing, so it is no surprised to see the forward being linked with a move again now.
Although the 23-year-old has played almost entirely on the left for Athletic this season, he is experienced playing off either side and had played almost equal games from the left and right before this campaign.
Williams is a diverse and exciting attacking talent and, if negotiations are as advanced as El Nacional say, a deal could soon be over the line for the Spanish forward to move to Liverpool.
