Liverpool were left reeling by the broken leg suffered by Alexander Isak just before Christmas.

The Swede, 26, moved to Anfield as the fourth most-expensive player in football history - joining for £125m from Newcastle. But the No9 only managed two Premier League goals before his latest injury - which is expected to rule him out for three to four months.

Having also signed Hugo Ekitike last summer in a £69m deal the Frenchman is currently the only senior fit centre-forward at Arne Slot’s disposal.

Others such as Federico Chiesa and £116m man Florian Wirtz have been utilised as a false nine but there’s little doubt that the Premier League champions are lacking a specialist in the position.

Liverpool linked with Memphis deal

One player linked as a potential short-term solution in recent days has been Memphis Depay. The 31-year-old currently plays for Corinthians in Brazil but could be tempted back to Europe in light of Liverpool’s interest.

He would be joining a club containing several Dutch compatriots - including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremie Frimpong - not to mention head coach Arne Slot.

Memphis has got experience of big clubs in his career having represented the likes of PSV, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid - as well as Corinthians.

A spell at Manchester United earlier in the player’s career however might mean some fans would be put off by this signing.

Corinthians want £9m for Memphis

And in light of Liverpool’s reported interest the Sao Paulo-based side have now put a valuation on their star attraction - who last month helped them to a Copa do Brasil title.

“Liverpool would be very keen on acquiring the Dutchman,” a report reads in BOLAVIP.

“In that context, Corinthians moved quickly to try and secure their star player as much as possible and set a price: €10 million or no deal.”

That equates to around £9m for a player out of contract during 2026. Memphis has scored 19 goals in 65 games for Corinthians although the move has not been without its difficulties.

It’s a lot to pay for a short-term solution but maybe Memphis could emerge as a useful option considering his pedigree.
