Liverpool make contract decision with star's exit nearing

Liverpool have lost some of their biggest stars for free in recent years.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate were the prime examples this summer, with the Reds failing to receive a single penny for a trio they spent over £75 million on.

It is a habit that the 20-time Premier League champions will want to shake, but they now face the prospect of another exodus next summer.

Virgl van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas and Wataru Endo are all into the last 12 months of their current deals, but there is another star that Liverpool risk losing on a free in 2027.

Decision made on Alisson contract discussion

Alisson Becker has been Liverpool’s undisputed number one since arriving at the club in 2018.

The Brazilian has widely been considered one of, if not the, best goalkeepers in the world for close to a decade, but he too is now into the final year of his deal.

Liverpool triggered a clause in the ‘keepers’ deal last season to keep him around until the summer of 2027, but talks are reported yet to open over an extension to keep him at the club beyond this season.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim that no discussions have taken place, and that formal negotiations over an extension likely won’t begin until later in the year.

The report states that there is a growing belief among some sources that the 33-year-old will depart on a free transfer after this season, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Lucca Brughmanns lined up as potential successors.

So far this season, Alisson has shown that he can still perform at the very top level, so losing him would feel like a blow to the Anfield faithful.

When Richard Hughes’ replacement as sporting director, now expected to be Julian Ward, is appointed then discussions may advance but - for now - it looks as though the Reds may once again lose one of their best players for free.
