Liverpool have golden chance to SIGN frustrated Tottenham Hotspur star
Liverpool have a golden opportunity and it's not one they should waste. A frustrated Tottenham Hotspur star may just be available.
Liverpool simply need to look at centre-backs. Their current situation just isn't a workable one - and it may need sorting this month.
The plan was to sign Marc Guehi for this campaign, of course. Crystal Palace ended that plan right at the last moment of the summer transfer window, deciding they couldn't afford to lose their captain without a suitable replacement.
Signing Guehi would have helped Liverpool out immensely. Not only would they have a fantastic player for this season, boosting their depth significantly, but he'd have eased the situation around Ibrahima Konate.
Konate's contract expires at the end of the campaign and he may leave Liverpool for free. The club need to find a replacement if he's not re-signing - Guehi could have been that.
Joe Gomez's future is up in the air, too, as he nearly joined AC Milan in August. Then there's Giovanni Leoni - an unknown quantity as he recovers from a serious knee injury.
And so there's little choice but to consider the market. Be it now or the summer, Liverpool will assess their cenrte-back situation.
Micky van de Ven's frustrations
Perhaps there's an option waiting for Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur? Micky van de Ven is reportedly growing frustrated at Spurs, says the Telegraph, as they continue to struggle badly.
Last season was saved by the Europa League victory, of course, but Tottenham's league campaign was an absolute disaster. They're struggling to do much better this time around, sitting in 14th.
And so there is essentially zero chance of them qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season. They may not have European football at all - and that will hit their books hard.
Hard enough that selling someone like Van de Ven, especially if he's unsettled, becomes a very real possibility. The 24-year-old has been great for Spurs despite their struggles, boasting the physical profile that elite clubs want.
The Dutchman is rapid, after all. Not only that but he knows how to pass the ball - a 96 per cent pass completion over medium range. Similar over short range, too.
That is essentially the hallmark of what Liverpool want. Recovery pace and the ability to operate as a consistent deep player in possession.
If Spurs need to sell, Van de Ven is absolutely one for Liverpool to watch.
