One Liverpool star PREDICTED Milos Kerkez's struggles
Liverpool opted to overhaul their full-back positions over the course of a record-breaking summer.
Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid one month from the end of his Liverpool contract with Kostas Tsimikas joining Roma.
Conor Bradley, meanwhile, signed a new long-term contract. Additions were made in the right and left-back slots too - with Jeremie Frimpong joining from Bayer Leverkusen for around £29.5m and Milos Kerkez coming in from Bournemouth.
The 21-year-old cost around £40m - with Richard Hughes signing the Hungarian for the second time in his career.
The Liverpool sporting director was in charge at Bournemouth when the Cherries signed Kerkez from AZ back in 2023 and a swift reunion took place last summer at Anfield.
Liverpool sign Kerkez to replace Robertson
However there were always likely to be consequences for left-back mainstay Andy Robertson. The 31-year-old has been on Merseyside since 2017 - joining from Hull City for around £8m.
But last season his form deserted him, leaving Hughes and Arne Slot contemplating reinforcements.
Kerkez has not had the smoothest of starts to life at Anfield - being substituted TWICE for poor performances in the Premier League and losing his spot to Robertson for the first game of the Champions League league phase.
The two are expected to contest the left-back spot for the season - which can be only a good thing for Slot.
Robbo predicted Kerkez's loss of form
And now it’s emerged via Steve Clarke - the Scotland manager - that Robertson PREDICTED what would happen with Kerkez this season.
He suggested in a chat with the media during the Scotland squad announcement for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Belarus next week that Robbo was confident he would soon win his place back at club level.
“I’d a good chat with Andy last week and a good chat with him before the season,” he said via the Daily Record.
Robertson's patience pays off
“And it has panned out pretty much how we thought it would at the time, that Kerkez would start in the team but Andy would find his way into the team.
“That’s what’s happened.
“On the plus side for us, if he’s getting good minutes for Liverpool but not getting all the minutes, it means he comes into Scotland camps probably a little bit fresher than he has been in recent years, which can only be good for us
“As a player you’ve always got a point to prove to your club manager, your international manager, to all the pundits or you guys or all the fans – you’ve always got a point to prove every time you go to the pitch.
“When you’re captain of your country you’ve probably got a little bit more of a point to prove.”
Robertson is out of contract in 2026 - and it remains to be seen whether or not he earns a new deal.
The Scotland captain had the opportunity to leave for Atletico Madrid over the summer but opted to stay and fight for his place - a decision that has so far paid off.
