A brutal injury rocked Liverpool's plans. Now a surgeon has moved to deliver the update we all wanted to hear.

Giovanni Leoni arrived at Liverpool this summer as one of the biggest talents in Europe. He looked like the future at centre-back with Parma, capable of delivering elite performances at just 18.

Remarkably few players have ever done that at the top level. There’s a reason, after all, that Liverpool were willing to pay over £30m for a player with such little experience.

We finally got to see Leoni in action last month, too. He was brilliant on debut, looking completely at home at the heart of the defence - dominant, really.

Only, it ended with a brutal heartbreak as Leoni suffered an awful knee injury and was forced off towards the end. That injury - and ACL tear - will keep him out for close to a year.

It’s an injury that doesn’t just interrupt Liverpool’s plans this season but also throws their long-term into doubt. Will Leoni still represent the future after this injury?

Giovanni Leoni's future

Calciomercato.it have discussed Leoni's state with an Italian surgeon. They were after some sort of clarity over what to expect from the defender going forward.

We're thrilled to see that it's all positive.

"Leoni will absolutely return to his best," he says. "There are top-level surgical techniques. There’s various staff monitoring the various rehabilitation and return-to-sport phases.”

The surgeon then doubled-down on his comments.

“The players are much more attentive, informed, and precise, as I said.

“From a biomechanics standpoint, after the surgery, there’s nothing that will prevent the knee from performing at 100%. So Leoni can certainly come back stronger than before.”

ACL injuries have long had the reputation of being career-defining. Of course, they absolutely were at one stage.

Advances in treatment, however, mean that's no longer the case and if all goes well, Leoni should be physically fine. The potential to be one of the world's best remains, then.
