‘We’re waiting’: Adored Liverpool star is a WANTED man
One Liverpool star has people waiting on him back in his home country. The forward is a wanted man.
Federico Chiesa has had a strange Liverpool career so far. He arrived with a decent amount of hype - the feeling was that the Reds found themselves an incredible bargain, snapping up a player once valued over £100m for around £10m.
But the debut campaign was a disappointing one and it really wasn’t Chiesa’s fault. The Italian barely played, at first because of fitness concerns and then because Arne Slot just didn’t pick him.
Just about everyone expected him to leave in the summer for regular first-team football but Chiesa decided to stay. He’s still at Liverpool and still fighting for his place.
Now, that place hasn’t really found itself yet, despite him consistently performing in his limited minutes. And that’s with Liverpool fans taking to Chiesa in a big way - his attitude and work-rate has endeared him to everyone.
It’s not just Liverpool fans watching and hoping for more minutes, either. Those back in Italy are eager to see more.
Federico Chiesa is wanted
The World Cup is next year and Italy will play the Play-offs for a place at the tournament. Chiesa hasn't been involved with the national team since joining Liverpool, however, and turned down a callup in this international break.
The sense is that Chiesa would be an automatic selection if he were playing regularly for Liverpool. Or regularly anyway, in fact.
Gianluigi Buffon certainly feels that way.
“We have to bring back all the best players. If someone stands out, there’s no preclusion of any kind, also because we need them,” he said.
“We’re waiting for Chiesa; there are very few like him in Europe, but [Gennaro Gattuso] hasn’t left anyone at home who deserves to be here. The group matters.”
The next couple of months are pivotal, then. Chiesa has admirers in Italy, with Napoli hoping to sign him. Liverpool fans - and seemingly Chiesa himself - want him to have a bigger role in the team at Anfield and refuse to give up.
But something needs to give if he's to play at the World Cup. Either Chiesa forces his way into the team and proves his worth, or he makes the move to Italy and give up on Liverpool.
