Richard Hughes leaving it LATE with contract offer to key star

Liverpool made a big transfer decision last summer - acquiring Milos Kerkez as their new first-choice left-back.

The 22-year-old was brought in from Bournemouth for a fee of around £40m. Hungary international Kerkez was expected to take the place of long-serving veteran Andy Robertson in the Reds’ lineup - after a shaky campaign on a personal level.

Although Liverpool won the Premier League under Arne Slot during the Dutchman’s first season in charge, there were some dubious moments for the 31-year-old Scot.

He scored an own goal, got himself sent off and even conceded a penalty throughout the campaign - with Slot offering more first-team football to Kostas Tsimikas than the Greek international might have expected.

Andy Robertson surges back into Liverpool first team

It all indicated that Robertson’s Liverpool days might be ticking down to an end - having first joined the club from Hull City back in 2017.

Only it’s not quite worked out like that.

Having had to endure the bench for the first few games of the season, Scotland captain Robertson has surged back into form - taking Kerkez’s place in the team and establishing himself once again as a key figure.

With a contract only extending to the end of the season, the revival has led to speculation that Robbo could be offered a new deal by Richard Hughes - the sporting director.

He declined the opportunity to move to Atletico Madrid last summer - preferring to stay and fight for his place. That move has certainly paid off but he is still awaiting his fate.

Robertson tempted by Celtic offer

A report from Football Insider claims that the Reds have not yet offered a new deal to their Champions League-winning left-back.

Given that he will be free to speak to potentially interested clubs in other leagues come January, Hughes is certainly leaving it late to make a decision.

Meanwhile, another report in TEAMtalk suggests that Robertson is tempted by a move to boyhood club Celtic next summer.

Liverpool will have to weigh up Robertson wage concerns

During this campaign Robertson has demonstrated emphatically that he is not yet done at the top level but Liverpool will have to bear his wages in mind.

It’s been estimated that Robertson makes around £160k per week. He turns 32 before the end of the season and no doubt Kerkez will reassert himself in the chase for the starting spot.

So Hughes is going to have to weigh up whether or not he wants a reserve left-back on mammoth wages for another season. Time will tell.
