£160k per week Liverpool star is begging for a new contract

Liverpool have got a couple of big contract issues to resolve before the end of the season.

Everyone knows about Ibrahima Konate. The French defender is out of contract in summer 2026 and if no new deal is agreed then he will be leaving for free.

The 26-year-old’s performances have steadily improved over the course of the season and Richard Hughes would be hard-pressed to find just as good a defender in the transfer market.

Therefore talks must conclude in a satisfactory manner for the stopper.

Robertson out of contract in 2026

The other big unresolved talking point concerns Andy Robertson. The left-back joined Liverpool back in 2017 and for the best part of a decade he was the only choice in the position.

But last season some errors crept into his game with left-back then decided upon as a transfer priority for Arne Slot and Hughes. Milos Kerkez was brought in from Bournemouth for £40m - ending Robbo’s strangehold on the left-back spot.

Despite some teething problems Hungary international Kerkez has emerged as Slot’s No1 in the position. But Robertson is proving that he still has something to offer.

The 31-year-old was drafted in for only his FIFTH Premier League start of the season against Sunderland on Wednesday. The vice-captain was in rare old form for the Reds as they claimed a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.

He came in, did a job with a minimum of fuss and certainly gave Slot and Hughes something to think about.

£160k per week Robertson worth a new deal

It could well have been a case that Robertson left in the January transfer window with Tottenham coming forward with their interest.

Ultimately a £5m offer for the defender was rejected - as Liverpool could secure the return of loanee Kostas Tsimikas from Roma as cover.

It’s understandable that Roberton would have been seeking first-team football ahead of Scotland’s FIFA World Cup campaign. But he ended up staying through the window - and will now have to fight Kerkez for minutes until the end of the season.

At that stage he too will be out of contract and it remains to be seen what Liverpool decide. Earning £160k per week as a backup defender feels unsutainabe - especially with the wage budget so high.

But it would make sense for Hughes to make an offer to Robertson on slightly altered terms in order to secure his continuity for another season or two.

He demonstrates every time he’s picked that he’s still got plenty to offer and given his leadership and experience he is certainly the kind of character Liverpool should be seeking tie down.
