Game over as manager delivers £150k per week Liverpool star a brutal warning over future
Liverpool have been using Giorgi Mamardashvili in goal during the USA preseason tour.
Whether the Georgian gets his chance under Andoni Iraola when the serious stuff starts remains to be seen. Mamardashvili - signed for an initial £24m from Valencia in 2024 - spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan with Los Che.
And last year he struggled behind Alisson unless the Brazilian was out injured.
He needs to grasp his chance soon with Alisson signed up to stay at Anfield until 2027 after a clause was triggered in his contract worth a reported £150k per week.
Ancelotti hints it's game over for Alisson
But the Brazilian is not only under threat for his position at club level.
International head coach Carlo Ancelotti has delivered a brutal warning to Alisson over his place in the national team.
“I think we need to look at new goalkeepers,” the tactician is reported to have said to Globo Esporte via Foot Mundo.
“And there are new goalkeepers.
“There are young goalkeepers playing in the Brazilian championship that we need to watch.
“Taking into account the qualities that Alisson and Ederson still have, the idea is to make a very careful assessment of the new goalkeepers.”
Alisson's miserable World Cup
Alisson missed the closing stages of the 2025/26 season under Arne Slot at Anfield - returning in time for Brazil’s ill-fated FIFA World Cup campaign.
The goalkeeper was in the eye of the storm as Norway sensationally knocked out the five-time champions at the round of 16 stage. It has led to widespread condemnation of the national team on home soil and calls for new blood.
Neymar, Casemiro and Danilo are among the senior options not expected to play again for the Selecao.
Alisson still has plenty to offer however and Ancelotti may move on a little more slowly from him than the others.
Alisson also linked with Liverpool exit
It goes without saying that the No1’s availability must improve with Mamaradashvili required extensively last season. Andoni Iraola will be hoping to see the best of the former Roma player in the upcoming campaign.
Alisson has been linked with a return to Serie A - where he played under Luciano Spalletti. The ex-Roma head coach is now in charge of Juventus and wanted to bring his former charge to Turin.
The overall cost of the deal - including wages and a transfer fee - ultimately proved too rich for the Italian giants and so Alisson remained at Anfield.
