Liverpool ready to perform contract U-turn for £150k per week midfielder
Liverpool have got some contract issues to solve - especially in midfield.
One issue looks to have been settled with Dominik Szoboszlai inking a brand new extension.
Fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch got a new deal towards the back end of last season - worth an eye-watering £277k per week.
Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott have all got deals which expire in 2027 and it remains to be seen what the future holds for that trio.
Alexis Mac Allister out of contract in 2028
And there is further uncertainty around Alexis Mac Allister. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner - who is about to appear in another final for Argentina - is out of contract in 2028.
It has been reported on both sides - player and club - that no talks have been held over a new deal. Liverpool have not seen the best of Mac Allister, 27, over the course of the last year leading to speculation that he may be sold on.
With only two years left on his deal - and diminishing performance levels - Richard Hughes may well be tempted to listen to interest from Real Madrid or other suitors.
Liverpool ready to give Mac Allister a new deal
Now however there is a contract U-turn on the cards with TEAMtalk claiming that new contract talks are scheduled with Mac Allister when the World Cup reaches its conclusion.
“The picture should become clearer once the 2026 World Cup concludes,” the report reads.
“That period is expected to open the door for formal contract extension talks, allowing both parties to sit down with a clearer view of the player’s standing and ambitions.”
New head coach Andoni Iraola has been in touch - claims the report - in ordrer to ascertain how to move forward with Macca.
Andoni Iraola holds Alexis Mac Allister talks
One the No10 returns to the AXA Training Centre it is expected that the duo will sit down and trash out the terms of a new deal.
“New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has already held brief discussions with Mac Allister regarding his role within the team,” the report reads.
“The pair have spoken about how the 27-year-old fits into the tactical plans moving forward, with the Argentine understood to be open to the conversations as he prepares for his return to club football.
“They will speak face to face when Mac Allister returns to the club.
“While the two-year deal provides Liverpool with security in the short term, the club are keen to secure his services beyond that point or establish if he is looking at a new challenge.”
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton for around £35m back in 2023 - inking a five-year deal at Anfield.
He is earning around £150k per week according to various reports - meaning a new contract with a pay rise would be a very expensive proposition - especially in light of Gravenberch’s new pay packet.
With his form on the wane it might have been understandable as to why Liverpool would be prepared to listen to offers.
But the ex-Boca Juniors schemer looks back to his best at the World Cup and may return to Anfield as a reinvigorated figure ahead of Iraola’s maiden campaign in charge.
