Liverpool defender set to RETURN from injury after eight months
An exciting young defender is set to return from injury after eight months out.
The last two weeks have offered a welcome respite for Liverpool fans. After the misery of defeats over and over again the international break has come at a perfect time.
Arne Slot has been able to rejuvenate and also ruminate over what needs to be done to get Liverpool out of their rut.
The reality is that there's no simple fix for Liverpool. Slot is trying to assemble a new team, and that takes time and patience.
Rome was not built in a day and neither will Liverpool click into gear immediately.
The chances are that we're only going to see the best face of Liverpool in a few months time. Probably towards the end of the season when all the players have become accustomed to playing with each other.
Until then there is a lot of rebuilding to do. Liverpool have to find a balance, and they have to find the right players for the system.
There's been suggestions of Slot maybe switching to a back three. This could benefit an exciting young defender who has been catching the eye on loan over the course of the last two years.
Luke Chambers has always been very highly rated by Liverpool. He's excelled on loan at Wigan over the course of last season and the season prior, while predominantly playing as part of a back three.
Capable of being deployed in the centre-back and the left-wing-back role, Chambers thrived at Wigan with his ability to play out from the back and involve himself in the build-up.
This could make the 21-year-old a valuable option for Liverpool right now. However, he's been ruled out with an injury for eight months.
It has prevented Chambers from going on the club's pre-season tour and earning himself a loan move.
The frustrating period has been caused by a persistent back problem for Chambers, which Liverpool have been carefully trying to manage.
Thankfully there is now good news. This is Anfield reports that Chambers is expected to return to Liverpool before the end of the year.
The club is planning some behind closed doors friendlies as Liverpool's U21 side are not scheduled to play another game until January, and Chambers could feature in these matches.
Ultimately, the first few months for him is going to be about getting back to match sharpness and not rushing him back straight away.
But it's great news that he is making progress. Chambers is a top talent and a player who could still be on the club's first-team radar.
