Liverpool completed an overhaul of their Premier League winning squad last summer, and more changes are coming.

Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike were added to Arne Slot’s attack, whilst Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez reinforced the Reds’ options at full-back.

The new-look Liverpool side have struggled to make things click this campaign, and it looks like more additions are on the horizon.

Succession planning has begun for Virgil van Dijk and, with the futures of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez uncertain, the centre of the defence is likely to be a priority over the next 12 months.

It’s likely more than one centre-half will be added, but Liverpool have now cooled their interest in a long-time target.

Liverpool cool interest in Premier League defender

A whole host of names have been linked with an Anfield move, including a number of Premier League defenders.

One target that Liverpool have reportedly cooled their interest in is Newcastle’s Sven Botman.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, the Premier League champions have made the decision to move on from the 25-year-old Dutchman due to his poor injury record.

The report also states that Newcastle and Botman are in negotiations over a new contract, so a deal may not have been straightforward anyway.

Botman is valued at €43 million by FootballTransfers and is under contract at Newcastle until 2027.

Will Liverpool sign a central defender in January?

Several reports have suggested that Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez, but there is yet to be any confirmation from the club.

News that club-record signing Isak has sustained a broken leg also sparked rumours that the Reds could move for a forward in the January window, and it is unclear which position is Slot’s priority.

As is often the case, Liverpool will likely only move for a player if they feel the conditions are right for a deal and not just because they feel they need to make additions.

A number of other options, including Alessandro Bastoni and Marc Guehi have been discussed but Liverpool are yet to act on their interest in any of their targets.

That makes sense to me. Botman is a quality defender when fit, but his injury record is a big risk, especially for a club already dealing with uncertainty at centre-back — investing €40m in a player who can’t stay available can quickly burn resources like a Stellar Burner. Liverpool probably need reliability as much as talent in that position right now.
