Florian Wirtz has been a bit of a flop for Liverpool.

The midfielder was brought in for £116 million last summer with many people believing that his creativeness would be the key to Liverpool's next generation of players.

And, since they moved Trent Alexander-Arnold on, they clearly needed someone of Wirtz's calibre to take the reins.

However, even though he did manage to get fair few goals and assists last term, fans expected a lot more from the German than he gave out.

Admittedly, under Iraola, the 23-year-old seems to have found his role in Liverpool's starting XI but, the Reds could still do with some other options to choose from as their number 10.

And now, they may have just stumbled upon the perfect player.

Paul Wanner could be Liverpool's next Florian Wirtz

Paul Wanner is likely to be a player that most Liverpool fans have never heard of.

The Austrian is probably most well-known for his time with Bayern Munich but, last summer, he was sold by the Bundesliga giants to PSV.

Since then, he's really managed to come into his own and has played in 39 games across all competitions for the Eredivisie outlet.

His main position for PSV has been as a central midfielder but, he's also been used as a number 10 on numerous occasions as well as a striker and a right-winger.

And, thanks to his impressive performances, several clubs from around the world are now interested in signing him with Liverpool one of them.

"Paul Wanner could become one of the biggest names in the next transfer window. The 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven attacking midfielder has come under scrutiny from Europe's biggest clubs," Sportowy wrote.

"At this stage, interest from top clubs is primarily focused on thorough scouting. An official, written transfer offer to PSV Eindhoven has not yet been made. Interested teams are gathering reports on the 20-year-old's performances and analyzing his development.

"Liverpool are expected to assess whether Wanner could enhance creativity and mobility in midfield in the future. Other Premier League clubs are conducting similar analyses.

"The German midfielder's name has also been added to Real Madrid's shortlist, which is considering the young player as part of its long-term midfield planning.

"Manchester City is also mentioned as an interested party. Wanner's strong performances in European competitions have led to reports about him reaching the sporting departments of major clubs."

Why Paul Wanner can be Liverpool's next Florian Wirtz

Not only is Wanner one of PSV's most versatile players but, the fact that he's only 20 years old also massively plays in his favour.

The Austrian has quickly managed to become one of Peter Bosz's most important players and, with the start of his development coming from the Bundesliga, it all feels very similar to Wirtz.

Not only does the midfielder have a keen eye for goal but he's also fairly strong on the ball and can pick out a pass from the other side of the pitch.

This ability to convert moments into goal-scoring opportunities is something that Liverpool desperately need and, even though Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak both seem to have re-found their form, an improved attack would always be welcomed.

Indeed, Liverpool do have Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai who can be used as a number 10 if needed but, with the goal-scoring ability that Wanner brings, it feels like he'd be perfect.

Of course, it would all come down to how much PSV would actually want for him but, on the face of things, with most of Europe's biggest clubs vying for his transfer, it feels like he'd be a smart move.
