Juventus want deal for £9m Liverpool academy midfielder
Liverpool have developed a reputation as a fine finishing school for young talents in recent years.
Premier League title winners Conor Bradley, Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold for example were all raised through the Reds’ academy system.
And there is plenty more talent in the pipeline in the shape of Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni. For those players unable to forge a first-team career at Anfield there is always the option of trying their luck elsewhere.
Recent loan deals include James McConnell and Lewis Koumas while Luca Stephenson is excelling on loan once again at Dundee United.
Once a young player creates a big enough reputation then Liverpool gain the chance to cash in on their talents.
Liverpool sold Tyler Morton for £9m
That’s exactly what happened with Tyler Morton - who had a stunning loan spell with Hull City during the 2023/24 season.
Expected to make a first-team breakthrough under Arne Slot the 2024/25 campaign was instead a frustrating one for the England under-21 international - who remained on the sidelines.
But Lyon had seen enough in Morton to strike a deal - with it estimated that the French side paid around £9m for the midfielder plus another £4m due in bonuses.
Liverpool retained a stake in Morton in the shape of a sell-on clause - whereby the Anfield club stand to rake in 20 percent of any proceeds Lyon make on a deal for Morton.
Juventus want Morton
Under contract until 2030 and establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1, Morton is going to go for a significant fee if and when Lyon decide to cash in.
And it could be sooner rather than later with Tutto Juve now claiming that Juventus are eyeing up a deal for the 23-year-old.
Lyon have done well out of selling players - banking huge fees for the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Alexandre Lacazette, Bradley Barcola, Ferland Mendy and Bruno Guimaraes just to name a few.
Morton could have been useful for Liverpool
If cash-strapped Lyon can command the kind of figure they got for Rayan Cherki from Manchester City - around £30m - then it would mean an additional £6m in Liverpool’s coffers.
It may well be a case of the one that got away for Morton however - with the club not retaining a buyback clause on the Lyon deal.
The Liverpool native has made a stunning start to his career in France and could easily have augmented the club’s scarce midfield resources this year.
But sporting director Richard Hughes was content to take a deal for Morton last summer - and Liverpool’s loss could be Juve’s gain.
