One final on-pitch statement could earn a star the Liverpool mega contract he's been chasing. It comes down to this.

Another massive summer is around the corner at Anfield. Liverpool will say goodbye to several stars, including some of the absolute biggest in their history.

But there's another group of players who are a little up in the air. It's not certain where the likes of Alisson Becker or Curtis Jones will be next season as there's enormous speculation around their futures.

Though, there's even less certainty around one player: Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman's contract expires in a little over 30 days and it's completely unclear whether a new one is close or not.

What's certain at this point is that Konate wants a massive contract. If he didn't, Liverpool would have things agreed by now.

And so Sunday represents Konate's final opportunity to state his on-pitch case for that contract. He'll start alongside Virgil van Dijk against Brentford knowing he can send a message to Richard Hughes and company.

Will one performance swing things? Probably not. But Konate has to do all he can to justify his demands. Giving a true demonstration of what he offers can only help in that regard.

So let's see what he brings.

Ibrahima Konate: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 22 May 2026, Ibrahima Konaté is concluding a heavily scrutinised season in Liverpool's backline. The 26-year-old French defender has been a regular fixture under Arne Slot, making 50 appearances across all competitions. However, he has shared in the team's defensive struggles, recently playing the full 90 minutes in a 4–2 defeat to Aston Villa on 15 May and 77 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Chelsea on 9 May.

Contract Saga and Future

Konaté's future at Anfield is currently one of the club's most critical storylines. His contract expires this June, and despite confirming in April that he was "close to an agreement," recent reports from David Ornstein indicate that negotiations have hit a severe delay. With just weeks left on his deal, speculation is mounting that he could depart on a free transfer, with long-term links to Real Madrid resurfacing as Liverpool look at defensive replacements like Pierre Kalulu.

International Standing

Despite the domestic uncertainty, Konaté was officially named in France's squad on 14 May for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.
