Good news! Liverpool one step closer to signing amazing right-winger
Liverpool have moved a step closer to signing an amazing right-winger.
Liverpool's need for new wingers this summer goes far beyond simply replacing Mohamed Salah.
While filling the void left by one of the club's greatest-ever players is a huge challenge in itself, the reality is that the Reds have been short of quality and depth in the wide areas for some time.
Even before Salah's departure, Liverpool's options out wide looked thin. The sale of Luis Diaz without a suitable replacement left the squad lacking balance, and throughout last season the team often found itself relying on players operating outside their natural positions.
Whenever Salah or Cody Gakpo were unavailable, Liverpool's attacking structure became noticeably weaker.
That lack of depth has had a direct impact on performances. Too often, Liverpool's attack has looked predictable and easy to defend against. Opponents have been able to stay compact, knowing there was a shortage of natural wide players capable of stretching the pitch and creating space.
As a result, Liverpool have sometimes struggled to create one-v-one situations or generate the kind of attacking variety needed to break down organised defences.
Adding new wingers would help solve several issues at once.
Liverpool need players who can contribute goals and assists on a consistent basis. Replacing Salah's output completely may be impossible, but spreading that responsibility across multiple players could make the team less reliant on one individual.
The squad needs more pace and directness. The best Liverpool sides have always been dangerous in transition, with wide players capable of carrying the ball over long distances and attacking defenders aggressively. That threat has been missing too often in recent seasons.
Most importantly, Liverpool need greater competition for places. If the club wants to challenge for major honours again, it cannot rely on the same small group of attackers week after week. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion make squad depth essential.
For all those reasons, signing one winger should be considered the minimum requirement this summer.
Realistically, Liverpool need at least two high-quality additions if they are serious about refreshing their attack and building a squad capable of competing at the very highest level once again.
The first option will likely be Yan Diomande. And the second option could be a winger who the Reds have moved a step closer to signing.
On Saturday, Brighton confirmed the signing of Zadok Yohanna. The 18-year-old Nigerian arrives at the club after becoming the latest sensation at AIK and having established himself as one of the best young wingers in the game right now.
This is an exciting signing for Brighton but it's also a signing that points toward the departure of an amazing winger on Liverpool's radar.
There already are an abundance of wingers at Brighton with most notably Kaorou Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh. The former is a left-winger, so his fate is unlikely to be impacted by the arrival of Yohanna.
However, the latter is a right-winger and he's still only 21-years-old. With Yohanna arriving, you'd think Brighton are preparing for a potential departure for Minteh.
At the very least it opens the door for the Gambian star to leave the club given Brighton has just signed his likely replacement.
And that certainly puts Liverpool one step closer to signing an amazing right-winger who is incredibly fast and capable of making things happen on a consistent basis.
Sure, Minteh is still raw but under Andoni Iraola, he could become an incredible player at Anfield.
