Future of £70m Liverpool star sealed after latest transfer news to emerge from Anfield

In terms of links and rumours, Liverpool have been one of the busiest teams in the 2026-27 summer transfer window.

They have a lot of areas among their ranks that could do with an upgrade but, since they spent over £450 million last summer, they obviously can't go spending over £240 million on two players again.

But, if they do end up needing to do this due to how inflated the market is, they'd have to make some major sales which is why a decent chunk of their players have already been linked with exits.

However, since the Reds' squad depth is already thin as it is, it's unclear whether they can really afford to get rid of their players before they get a few signings through the door.

So, the fact that the future of one of their players now seems to be sealed will certainly be a weight off of their shoulders.

Tottenham now want to sign Andreas Schjelderup which could stop them from going for Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo was a fraction of his former self last season.

Most Liverpool fans thought that the Dutchman would thrive without having Luis Diaz among the Reds' ranks but, in reality, it feels like he needed that competition to take his game to the next level.

Whether the former PSV ace was used as a left-winger or a striker, he never really found a rhythm during Arne Slot's last season in charge which led to fans wanting him axed from Liverpool's squad.

In fact, some even demanded that the attacker was moved on.

However, since Victor Munoz is the only player who's been brought in so far, it doesn't really feel like Liverpool can afford to lose Gakpo so, this latest update from TEAMtalk is certainly good news.

"Indeed, sources close to the Portuguese club have made it clear they do not feel under any pressure to sell for less than €80million (£68m / $91m) and will drive a hard bargain," they wrote.

"Benfica sources say they believe Schjelderup possesses the quality and potential to become every bit as effective as Anthony Gordon, who recently joined Barcelona for a comparable fee.

"They view the young attacker as a long-term asset capable of developing into one of Europe’s top talents, provided he is given the right environment to flourish. Therefore, they are putting a price on him that represents market value for a player of his age and quality.

"We can reveal that talks between Tottenham and Benfica remain at a very early stage, with no formal offer yet submitted – that’s despite the north London club still pursuing a £60m move for Manchester City star Savinho.

"Schjelderup himself is understood to be very open to a move to the Premier League after rejecting the chance to sign a new contract extension at the Estadio da Luz.

"His current deal runs until 2028, giving Benfica some room to negotiate, but they are in the peak time to sell him as he reaches the last 18 months of his deal.

"While Liverpool and Chelsea have also been linked with the player in recent days and do hold confirmed interest, Spurs’ proactive approach could give them an advantage if they move quickly.

"Benfica are prepared to cash in on their star man this summer but will only do so at a price that reflects his rising value and bright future in the game."

Why this could mean that Cody Gakpo's future is sealed

Everyone knows that Tottenham will be doing everything in their power to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle again.

They've already spent around £185 million on new midfielders and, since their attack and defence weren't much good last term, it's hardly surprising to see defenders such as Jan Paul van Hecke already making their move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Their attack is another story. A lot of their activity up front has come from Dominic Solanke over the last couple of years but, since he's often injured, it's clear to see why Roberto de Zerbi is looking to bolster his attacking ranks.

Gakpo, who has been rated at £70 million by Liverpool, has been one of the main players linked with Tottenham this summer but, since they're now showing an interest in Schjelderup, it could mean that their focus is turning away from the Dutchman.

This is great news for Liverpool as, if they moved Gakpo on, they'd have even less options to choose from and would probably find themselves in a worse position than they were in during the 2025-26 campaign.

Of course, things can change in football but, for the moment, it feels like Iraola will be able to keep his main core of players together which, during a transitional stage, is ideal.
