€60m star confirms he's coming to Liverpool
It's now obvious a €60m star will be coming to join Liverpool.
Let's face it, things have not been as smooth in the transfer window for Liverpool as we expected. If anything this has been a slow and disappointing window for the Reds so far.
It's still early days and of course subject to change when the World Cup concludes but this time last year Liverpool moved heaven and earth to secure the transfer of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. While also being very close to signing Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
What a time it was. Liverpool fans all expected the same this time around with the pursuit of Yan Diomande. However, that seems to have taken a left-field turn with the Ivorian preferring to join Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool left scratching their heads.
It might be time to accept that the club are now well and truly in a transition phase. Diomande was never a 'win now' type of signing but he was as close as you can get to that.
Looking around the transfer market there are very few players who excel on the right-wing and who would be capable of taking on the reins from Mo Salah.
Diomande was one of the few players. Now, Liverpool must look elsewhere.
That search is not going to find popular answers. There's a lot to admire about Yankuba Minteh, Savinho and other players who Liverpool would like to sign for their right-wing.
However, they also all come with question marks and that means Liverpool are going to have to take a certain level of risk when deciding who they want to sign.
In recruitment there is never a 'sure thing' spending money is always risky, especially when you're spending a lot of money.
So, you want to minimise the risks as much as possible. In the case of finding a right-winger this summer, that is not going to happen for Liverpool.
They are going to have to take a risk and spend money on a player that will come with uncertainties.
Who the Reds ultimately decide to go for remains to be seen. Minteh feels like the perfect option because he is young and has that speed and directness that would suit Andoni Iraola's profile.
He's by far from the finished article but for a reasonable price, The Gambian international is an exciting purchase who could add a lot of value to Liverpool's right flank.
Of course the right-wing isn't the only position Liverpool will be looking at. There are so many other areas of the squad where investment is necessary.
Another issue with Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold departing to sign for Real Madrid is the right side of the defence. Liverpool are seriously lacking depth in that area and could do with some cover.
The perfect option would be someone who could play both as a right-back and as a centre-back. A hybrid so to say. Liverpool had exactly that profile just one year ago.
His name was Jarrel Quansah and he was ultimately sold because Arne Slot didn't quite trust him at the time. But since he has left Liverpool he has been a revelation.
Quansah became a regular at Bayer Leverkusen, helped them reach the Champions League again and in the process he earned himself a spot in England's World Cup squad.
Against Mexico, he started the game as a right-back and did very well until an unfortunate red card.
But that won't taint his performance nor the level he is now reaching. It's very clear that Quansah would be more than good enough for Liverpool.
The Reds have a €60m buy-back clause they can activate next summer and that is now looking inevitable. Quansah will be coming to Liverpool, sooner rather than later.
