Arne Slot's Liverpool future has been under constant scrutiny this season.

The Dutchman led the Reds to the Premier League title last term and, although they started the 2025-26 season off well, things went south as the campaign went on.

Of course, there's still just under half of the season left but with the Merseyside outfit now 14-points adrift of first-placed Arsenal, their top-flight title hopes are close to non-existent.

Some fans have even called for the Dutchman to be sacked due to Liverpool's under-performance but now, it feels like the former Feyenoord boss could be closer than ever to being dismissed.

Liverpool's next clash is set to come on Monday with the Anfield outfit set to face Barnsley in the FA Cup.

It's only the third round of the competition and since the South Yorkshire outfit are 17th in the League One table, it should be an easy win for the Reds.

That is, even if they do choose to rest the vast majority of their first-team players.

However, if by some miracle Conor Hourihane's men triumph, some serious questions will need to be asked about Slot.

As mentioned, pressure is already mounting upon the Dutchman's head with a defeat against Barnsley likely to tip things out of his favour.

In reality, defeat shouldn't even cross the minds of those involved with Liverpool and even though the Reds are on a decent run at the moment, there's no knowing what's around the corner, especially after what happened against Plymouth last term.

The FA Cup is one of the last competitions Liverpool actually have a chance of winning now that they're out of the Carabao Cup, which is why Monday's tie could be rather important.

If there's a shock upset, given how bad Liverpool's form has been this season, it will be impossible for Slot to survive.

Liverpool will give some of their fringe players a run out

Even though a lot is riding on Monday's game, it feels likely that some of the Reds' fringe players will be given a run out.

Players such as Rio Ngumoha, Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa will have a point to prove and will want to show how much they can help the team this season.

It's clear that Slot has his favourites already but, since the Anfield outfit already have a lot of players out injured, any extra bit of rest that their team can get is likely to be taken with open arms.

And, while Monday's clash will be a good time for those players to prove their worth, the fact that the FA Cup could be the only thing Liverpool win this year means that the game means a lot more to the club than most would like.

Here's hoping that Liverpool don't let Slot down, otherwise, it could be curtains for the Dutchman.
