Why Liverpool NEED to agree record-breaking deal to replace Mo Salah
Mohamed Salah has been Liverpool’s best player for almost a decade, but his reign at Anfield could soon be over.
Despite signing a massive new contract last season, Salah has found himself out of Liverpool’s starting XI on multiple occasions so far this campaign.
After sitting on the bench for the entirety of Liverpool’s 3-3 Premier League draw with Leeds Salah made his frustrations public, saying he felt thrown under the bus by the club.
The Leeds game was the third match in a row that the 33-year-old found himself on the bench, but his outburst led to him being dropped from the squad entirely for the Reds’ 1-0 win over Inter Milan.
Salah’s future is less certain than ever, and Liverpool need to start preparing for life without the Egyptian King.
Why Liverpool must break their transfer record to replace Mo Salah
A number of players are being touted as potential additions to Liverpool’s front line as the January window fast approaches.
Antoine Semenyo and Yan Diomande are two of the names that are being constantly linked with a move to Merseyside but, whilst both are great players in their own right, neither are on the level of Salah.
Very few players in fact are capable of reaching the level that Salah displayed last season, when the forward scored 34 goals and provided 23 assists for Liverpool.
The man who looks closest to that level currently in Europe is long-term Reds’ target Michael Olise.
The Frenchman has six goals and nine assists in just 13 appearances for Bayern Munich this season, but a reported price tag of €150 million (~£131m) complicates things.
That fee would exceed the club-record £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak in the summer, a window in which the Reds broke their club record twice after bringing in Florian Wirtz a few weeks before Isak’s arrival.
Is Michael Olise really worth €150 million?
The bar has been set high by Salah at Liverpool. Isak and Wirtz may be capable of picking up some of the responsibility in the Reds’ front line without Salah, but the addition of Olise would take Arne Slot’s side to a whole new level.
Over the past year, the Frenchman ranks in the top percentile among Europe’s wingers for both assists and shot creating actions.
The 24-year-old plays 6.74 progressive passes per 90 minutes, has 5.18 progressive carries per 90 and completes 2.5 successful take-ons per 90.
On top of that he also takes 3.61 shots per 90 and averages 6.5 touches in the opposition penalty area.
Olise would not only unlock Liverpool’s current forwards, he provides plenty of goal threat himself.
Having spent three seasons at Crystal Palace, Olise boasts Premier League experience and wouldn’t need to take time to adjust to English football like Wirtz has this season.
If that output were to continue if Olise made a Premier League return, he would look well worth the hefty price tag.
Can Liverpool justify that big a spend?
The Reds broke the bank last summer and so far it hasn’t yielded the results many were hoping for.
Liverpool’s chances of retaining the Premier League title looked almost non-existent by the start of December and throwing more money at the situation is an approach many supporters will be cautious off.
Manchester United and Chelsea have proven over the last five years that splashing big money on players to add to an already struggling side does not always lead to success.
A record-breaking deal for Olise represents a huge risk, but it could have a huge pay-off.
Slot’s biggest problem this season has been chance creation. Isak and Hugo Ekitike are both known to be ruthless in front of goal, but a lack of consistent high-quality chances has meant they are perceived to be underperforming.
Olise could be the man to finally get Liverpool’s forwards firing and his addition, although expensive, could be the catalyst that makes the Reds title challengers once again.
