Why Barcelona star is destined for Liverpool this summer
Liverpool are looking for a refresh this summer following a massively disappointing campaign.
Some high-profile departures are expected to fund the Reds’ summer spending and Richard Hughes and Co will be looking to bolster the squad in multiple areas.
One of the most pressing issues with the team for many supporters is the midfield, especially with the futures of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo all uncertain.
Several targets have been discussed, but there is one potential option that feels more and more destined to join Arne Slot’s squad every day.
That man is Frenkie de Jong, and his move to Liverpool could be on this summer.
Frenkie de Jong is destined to join Liverpool
The Dutchman has been considered one of the world’s best midfielders for some time now and has been a key figure for Barcelona for a number of years.
Barcelona have suffered from well-documented financial issues recently, which has limited their spending power, but the worst seems to be over now for the European giants who are getting ready for a massive transfer window.
It appears that Anthony Gordon is going to be a Barca player, with the Englishman set to join for a fee of around €80 million (~£69m), and Julian Alvarez has also been linked with a switch to the Camp Nou for a fee of around €100 million (~£87m).
If both deals do go through, Barcelona will no doubt be looking to recoup some funds and De Jong could find himself on the chopping block.
The 29-year-old is valued at €42.1 million (~£36.5m) by FootballTransfers, and has suffered a drop in value in recent seasons due to ongoing injury problems.
De Jong has missed 62 games for his club and country in the last three seasons, which would certainly be a concern for Liverpool if they did move for him.
The midfielder’s talent is undoubted though, and if he were available for around £35 million then the risk of injury might be one worth taking.
Slot’s side is also packed full of De Jong’s countrymen, and no one would be surprised to see another Dutch national arrive at Anfield.
The move would make a lot of sense, and Richard Hughes and Co should certainly consider trying their luck with a low bid for De Jong this summer.
