Super fast winger confirms he's ready to join Liverpool
Liverpool need a winger and one player confirmed he's ready to join the Reds.
Richard Hughes got off to a strong start at Liverpool by bringing in a number of exciting, promising signings last year who are now catching the eye at the World Cup, but Liverpool’s rebuild is still very much in progress and far from finished.
A lot of the issues in the current squad come down to balance, or rather the lack of it. That was one of the biggest strengths of Jurgen Klopp’s most successful Liverpool sides.
At their peak, Klopp’s teams were built almost perfectly in terms of structure. Every piece of the puzzle fit together. There was a blend of physicality, relentless pressing, top-level technique, and, crucially, real pace in attack.
That combination meant the system elevated the players, and the players in turn made the system even more effective.
Right now, Liverpool don’t quite have that same equilibrium.
There’s still plenty of technical ability in the squad, and the work rate is generally strong, but the overall profile of the team feels a bit lopsided.
One of the biggest differences is the lack of genuine pace in wide and attacking areas. Liverpool can no longer consistently rely on the electric acceleration once provided by players like Sadio Mane or even Luis Diaz at his sharpest.
Because of that, recruitment now has a very clear focus - restoring that missing pace and bringing back the kind of threat that once made Liverpool’s attack so devastating.
Finding players who can match the directness and explosiveness of Mane, Diaz and peak Mo Salah is a key part of getting the squad back into better balance. Arne Slot previously highlighted the need for more pace in the side, and that idea still feels relevant today. Even if he is no longer in the picture, the point itself hasn’t suddenly become less valid.
Andoni Iraola’s style would also demand high intensity, speed, and constant attacking threat, which means Liverpool would likely need to be active and ambitious in the transfer market to fully suit that approach.
If Liverpool are serious about returning to their very best, rediscovering that sharp, fast-paced edge in attack is going to be a crucial step in the rebuild.
The real question, though, is simple - who is actually available?
There are very few elite wide forwards who combine pace with top-level one-v-one ability and are realistically attainable. Most of the best wingers in world football are already locked into elite sides like Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Players such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Michael Olise, and Lamine Yamal are firmly out of reach. They’re not for sale, and even if they were, Liverpool would struggle to compete for their signatures in the current market.
They have to aim for a player who is more realistic. And who that player could be is now becoming very obvious.
It's simply impossible to overlook Yan Diomande at this stage. He's the perfect package. At 19-years-old, he is a superstar already and he can be one of the best in the world.
Sure, the fee RB Leipzig want for him is high. However, given there is no better option to replace Mo Salah on the right-wing, Liverpool don't have a choice.
Diomande confirmed anyway that he is absolutely ready to make the step-up to Anfield on Sunday night making his World Cup debut.
The Ivorian became the first player Opta has on record since 1966 to create 5+ chances (5), make 5+ tackles (5), win 10+ duels (11) and have 10+ touches in the opposition’s box (12) in a FIFA World Cup match.
Those statistics are incredible and they are indicative of what Andoni Iraola's side will rely on. Pace, creativity from the flanks. But also the ability to get into the box and to work hard off the ball, winning five tackles (the most in the game) shows Diomande is ready to join Liverpool and fit in seamlessly.
