Steven Gerrard waiting to receive Liverpool SOS call

Liverpool have been plagued by indifferent form this season.

The Anfield club’s Premier League title defence isn’t turning out the way they planned - especially after £450m worth of new signings.

Issues on the field have been compounded by drama off it - with Mo Salah’s hugely successful reign at the club set to be brought to a premature end.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this for Arne Slot - Liverpool’s head coach who led them to the title at the first time of asking.

Will Liverpool decide to sack Slot?

Due to the adverse results his club have suffered this season - not to mention the inconsistency of the performances - it has been suggested that a change could be made in the dugout.

It would represent a remarkable about-turn from the FSG hierarchy if Slot were to go so soon after winning the title. But goodwill and patience will only stretch so far so long as results remain uneven.

Slot is under contract until 2027 - meaning it wouldn’t cost the club a fortune to dispense with his services. The identity of a potential successor right now would be uncertain - with few top-quality managers available.

But if Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes and Co. decide to make a change in the short-term then there is one name standing out above all others.

Gerrard very keen to return

Steven Gerrard will go down as perhaps the greatest player in club history and according to Football Insider he would jump at the opportunity to succeed Slot even on a stop-gap basis.

“Steven Gerrard is “very keen” to return to Liverpool and would find it very difficult to reject an interim manager offer,” the report reads.

“Gerrard would be open to taking the reins on an interim basis should the opportunity arise.”

Gerrard managed Rangers and Aston Villa before embarking on an adventure with Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. He left his post earlier this year and hasn’t taken another job since.

But he would be willing to end his exile in order to take up the role at Anfield. Gerrard has got extensive experience of life as a coach at Liverpool too - and would no doubt bring some genuine heart and passion to the role.

First however and the focus has to be on winning matches. But if Slot can’t get this team back firing on a consistent basis then the time could soon come to send out the SOS to Gerrard.
