£100m transfer sets up season-defining signing for Liverpool

Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of players ahead of the summer transfer window.

Their 2025-26 season was fairly disappointing with Arne Slot even being relieved of his duties due to their poor performance.

This lack of form has caused fans to demand change at Anfield with almost every area of their squad needing a new player or two.

Of course, sales will need to be completed before any signings are made but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from turning.

And now, thanks to some transfer business elsewhere, one of Liverpool's most important moves of the season could be about to occur.

Tottenham want Sandro Tonali which could open the door for Archie Gray to Liverpool

Tottenham managed to have an even worse season than Liverpool during the 2025-26 campaign.

Spurs were just a few points out of the relegation zone with West Ham United taking them to the final day.

Luckily, the North London outfit survived which meant that they could sign players such as Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi to bolster their ranks.

And, since they still need a fair few new players to avoid a relegation battle again, Sandro Tonali has made his way onto their shortlist.

The report from Fabrizio Romano states that Roberto De Zerbi wants the Italian with the club set to go head-to-head with Arsenal and Manchester City for his transfer with the Magpies wanting around £100 million for their star man.

However, since Spurs already have Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray in that position, it could open the door for one of them to exit N17.

And, since Gray has been linked with Liverpool in the past, he could be the one moved on this summer which would be ideal for the Reds.

Why the signing of Archie Gray could define Liverpool's season

Gray may only be 20 years old but he already has an abundance of experience under his belt.

Before he joined Tottenham back in 2024, the Englishman was a regular starter with Leeds United, featuring in 52 games across all competitions.

And, during this time, the Whites were facing a bit of an injury crisis at right-back which led to the youngster being used there for most of the season.

The same has happened during his time at Spurs with the midfielder's versatility often shining through.

He's played all across the back four and even on the right wing from time to time which shows how good he actually is.

And, the fact that he's only missed six games throughout the entirety of his career through injury is another massive selling point.

Defensive midfield and right-back have been two of Liverpool's main problem areas for as long as anyone can remember so, if Andoni Iraola can manage to get a deal over the line, he could basically get himself a two in one deal.

This, with everything that Liverpool already need to change, could end up being massive for the Premier League and Champions League hopes in the 2026-27 season.
