Path clearing for DRAMATIC return of Liverpool coach

The path really seems to be clearing for a Liverpool coach to return. Moves are happening away from Anfield to make it possible.

Liverpool's difficult season continued on Saturday as they fell 3-0 to Nottingham Forest. The Reds have now lost six out of their last seven Premier League fixtures.

There's essentially no real chance of them retaining the title, then, while succeeding in other competitions looks unlikely. Things just haven't worked after the summer overhaul - though, the problems have arguably been there longer than that.

So change is needed, in other words. Liverpool will look at several ways to enact that change, with the worst-case being a change of head coach. We can't see that happening anytime soon, especially when there are other avenues to explore.

One of those is unquestionably the transfer window. The Reds will try to reshape things a bit and see if it causes the squad to click into place.

But it's not the only way. Some moves away from Anfield appear to set the stage for a dramatic coaching return.

Johnny Heitinga to return?

Liverpool hired Johnny Heitinga for Arne Slot's coaching staff back in 2024 and he was a success by all accounts. He was a part of the title-winning setup, after all.

But Heitinga left the club this summer for Ajax, who offered him the head coaching role. Few begrudged him taking that one.

He was replaced by another Dutchman - Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The former left-back is currently on the coaching staff at Anfield but reports this week suggest he's a wanted man.

Football Insider is one of those claiming Indonesia want him to manage their national team. It's thought that Van Bronckhorst may well take the job, again leaving Liverpool's coaching staff short.

Only, that would set the stage for Heitinga. He was sacked by Ajax earlier this month after a poor start and is without a job right now.

We know Liverpool as a club are willing to rehire like that. Pep Lijnders left his role as assistant to Jurgen Klopp back in January 2018 to take over as NEC Breda head coach. He then left them a few months later and was back with the Reds by June.

Something similar could well happen with Heitinga. The band might just get back together.
