Out of nowhere: £100m Premier League star in Liverpool sights
Liverpool have a genuine Premier League star in their sights. This one has come out of nowhere.
Liverpool are looking at their midfield this summer but it isn't entirely clear what they'll do. It will likely depend on how Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister look going forward - both have limited years remaining on their contracts.
Replacing one or both could happen, while Curtis Jones looks like a very possible departure, too. Wataru Endo's uncertain future means there's very little security in Liverpool's midfield options.
How they go about fixing that is anyone's guess. Investment in youth? Several 'safe' signings? One major signing?
The latter appears to be a legitimate option. That's if a new report from CaughtOffside is to be believed as they have Liverpool down as interested in Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian has been linked strongly with Arsenal, who apparently bid for Guimaraes earlier in the week. He's got a £100m release clause in his contract, meaning he is up for grabs - though, Newcastle would almost certainly force any potential buyer to meet that clause.
So could Liverpool? It's possible. Especially if there are more high-profile departures, particularly in midfield. That would free up money in both fees and wages to make a deal possible.
It's one that would certainly cause a stir. Liverpool have been at odds with Newcastle for over a year now, firstly over the Alexander Isak deal and then by gazumping them for the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Victor Munoz.
Signing their star player with a release clause would be quite the statement, really. One that almost certainly makes relations between the two clubs completely untenable.
But if Guimaraes is the one, he's the one. Liverpool are just monitoring the situation for now but they may ultimately decide to pull the trigger here.
And that would bring chaos.
