There's a new Steven Gerrard on the block and it's inevitable that he will end-up at Liverpool (again).

What a player the Reds' former no.8 was. Gerrard could do anything on the football pitch. He was the master in his prime and undoubtedly one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.

It was unfortunate he was never able to play in a truly 'great' Liverpool side. For most of his career he had to carry the Reds on his back.

He's without a shadow of a doubt the best midfielder Liverpool have ever produced from the club's academy.

Generations of young midfielders have aspired to be him for decades since he emerged. So far to no avail. Curtis Jones has perhaps come the closest.

But there's another fantastic midfielder who might just finally be able to step into Gerrard's shoes in the future.

Liverpool have to have more academy players and more importantly scousers in the team. With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jarell Quansah both leaving the club, this has been reduced to just Jones.

But in order for the players and the team to truly represent Liverpool, it would be nice to see a few more scousers back in the side.

The club's academy is working hard to achieve this. There has been a concentrated effort to recruit more talent locally and there's an exciting generation of young players coming through at U16 and U18 level who have been at Liverpool since they were U9 players.

But it's not just those players worth keeping an eye on. As we mentioned above, Liverpool let go of a lot of scouse talent in the summer window.

Some like Alexander-Arnold, may never return to Anfield. But a lot of the younger players have buy-back clauses inserted into their transfer deals.

So, Liverpool still control their future, including Quansah.

One player who didn't get a buy-back clause is Tyler Morton. Liverpool only inserted a sell-on clause when they agreed a move for him to leave the club and join Lyon.

That shouldn't matter too much. A sell-on clause will still give the Reds an advantage should they wish to re-sign him in the future.

Re-signing Morton is looking inevitable for Liverpool at the moment. He's been a revelation since arriving at Lyon and has quickly become a fan favourite.

His performances have been on another level. He's dominated the midfield and has helped his side keep level on points with Paris Saint Germain after the first six rounds of fixtures with 15 points.

In his last game, Morton also opened his account for Lyon with a Gerrard esque goal. Making a surging run into the box, Morton met a cross with his head and found the back of the net with a sumptuous header.

It was a goal Gerrard would have scored in his prime for Liverpool, and at this rate the 22-year-old is proving he might just be the next best midfielder the club has produced since the former Reds captain.

And it's proving that ultimately Morton's place is still back at Anfield. Eventually, the club will re-sign him, and he will come back to the Reds.

It's only a matter of time.
