Michael Edwards has found the next Bruno Fernandes and he's special
Michael Edwards has reportedly found the next Bruno Fernandes, and he looks special.
The club's former sporting director and now FSG's Head of Football Operations has come under a bit of scrutiny recently.
Not only has Edwards overseen and played a key role in Liverpool's mass spending last summer, which hasn't borne it's fruits just yet, the last word is important to stress here. Yet. Because it may easily come together given Liverpool signed a lot of talented young players.
However, he's also been under scrutiny because what he was promised has not come to fruition. Edwards was supposed to oversee FSG entering a multi-club era.
His role was supposed to herald a new dawn where Liverpool followed their rivals' footsteps and became part of a multi-club system.
But that idea now seems 'dormant' and it throws up questions about the future of Edwards. His contract expires in 2027 and so far there hasn't been any talk of Liverpool or FSG wanting him to stay beyond his current terms.
For the time in between, Edwards will still be focusing on reinforcing Liverpool. He's a boyhood fan of the club and he will want the Reds to do well.
One has to concede that Liverpool's recruitment has changed for the better under Edwards' second-term.
We have seen the Reds enter markets they haven't really entered before. Liverpool have expanded their global scouting network and as a result have made some impressive signings from across the globe.
This has seen Armin Pecsi, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye arrive at the club. Meanwhile, Sidy Barhama Ndiaye, who spent two weeks at Liverpool last summer, is expected to sign for the club when he turns 18-years-old, unless things drastically change with his circumstances.
Liverpool are now definitely targeting untapped markets and are not afraid to sign players who impress them at youth tournaments.
Ndiaye and Ndukwe were both stars at the U17 World Cup. Daniel Banjaqui is another player on the club's radar from that tournament in Qatar.
And it seems like, they are not the only ones the Reds' scouts have admired.
There's another 17-year-old who has emerged on Liverpool's radar as well if the latest report is to be believed and he could be the next Bruno Fernandes.
According to Colombian journalist Alexis Rodriguez, Liverpool are tracking Atletico Nacional midfielder Matias Lozano.
The young Colombian has recently broke into the senior team at Atletico Nacional and he also caught the eye for Colombia's U17 national team.
What stands out about Lozano is that he is a very creative playmaker who loves to thread through balls and passes into the box.
In many ways when you watch him play there is a lot of Bruno Fernandes about him in his style of play. He looks to create chances and he's also very aggressive when trying to win the ball back.
Now, because Lozano is only 17-years-old, he will only be able to move to Liverpool when he turns 18-years-old but that will happen next month - so technically Liverpool could sign him.
What the Reds need to be vary of is that they already have three ESC players in Pecsi, Ndukwe and Ndiaye. None of them meet the requirements to get a work-permit but qualify under a special exemption.
At the moment elite Premier League clubs are limited to four ESC players. That means Liverpool would be filling up their last slot by signing Lozano.
There is a loophole though, players can be sent out on loan and then they do not take up a slot as an ESC player, and this is likely going to be the case with Pecsi.
So Lozano is one to keep an eye on.
