Marc Guehi talks underway as Liverpool offer confirmed
Liverpool tried and failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day.
Sporting director Richard Hughes left it late to bid for the 25-year-old - offering an initial £35m for the Eagles’ captain. But Palace ultimately pulled out of a deal - with the FA Cup holders unable to source a replacement in time.
The Reds were left frustrated by the last-minute change of mind - and have been counting the cost of being a man short at the back ever since.
Nonetheless the England centre-back will be out of contract in 2026 and Liverpool remain hopeful of concluding a high-profile free transfer deal.
Guehi to spark big free transfer battle
The issue is that the Premier League champions have lost their clear run at Guehi - with as many as 13 clubs now interested in a deal according to a report in TEAMtalk.
And if Liverpool were hoping to get ahead of the pack and tie up a permanent transfer in January on a knockdown price they may well be frustrated.
According to the same report Palace head coach Oliver Glasner is once again insistent that Guehi not be sold.
And the player himself now appears to be content to see out the season at Selhurst Park - which will instigate an almighty clamour for his signature come the end of the season.
Liverpool extend offer to Guehi
Liverpool are among the teams who have been in contact with Guehi’s representatives over a summer deal - but they will have to convince the player to choose Anfield over a range of other options.
“Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Manchester United and Tottenham have confirmed to the player’s camp that they are ready to offer him terms,” the report reads.
Overseas interest comes from a host of top European clubs meanwhile - and they will have the advantage of speaking to Guehi as soon as January rolls around.
Top European clubs also want Guehi
“Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Juventus, Inter Milan and Galatasaray have all registered their interest in opening official talks from January 1.”
Guehi has already agreed to move to Liverpool once before but that came ahead of Palace pulling the plug on the summer deal.
The Merseysiders will be hoping that their groundwork will count for something when one of the biggest free transfer battles of all time commences next year.
