Marc Guehi? Liverpool now have a BETTER signing lined up

Liverpool have a chance to complete a better signing than Marc Guehi. The opportunity is there.

Liverpool won't be signing Marc Guehi. The centre-back has chosen to join Manchester City this month, five months ahead of his contract expiring with Crystal Palace.

They came incredibly close to getting him, of course. A deal was all-but agreed for Guehi to sign for Liverpool back at the very end of the transfer window, only for Palace to collapse the deal right at the last moment.

Any hopes that Guehi would simply wait to join the Reds were then ended this week as the centre-back accepted an offer from City. He'll now head there, leaving Liverpool scrambling for a backup option.

But we think there's an obvious one. One who's a better bet than Guehi, too.

Nico Schlotterbeck is the one

Things are opening up for Nico Schlotterbeck to join Liverpool. Borussia Dortmund are almost certainly selling their star this year as he’ll enter the final year of his contract in the summer.

And Liverpool are well-placed to get him. Real Madrid have apparently moved on to different targets, while Bayern Munich don’t look like getting a deal done, either.

Schlotterbeck heading to Liverpool, then? We have him down as the biggest transfer the club could make - someone who does boast the potential to replace Virgil van Dijk.

That, of course, will be the biggest challenge facing Liverpool over the next couple of seasons. It’s debatable whether Guehi has that kind of potential but Schlotterbeck almost certainly does.

He’s an absolutely elite passer - one of the best-passing centre-backs in world football - while also boasting a fantastic aerial duel success rate. Those are the two hallmarks of a Liverpool defender: contribute massively in possession and stop the long balls to isolated strikers.

Guehi doesn’t quite offer that. Schlotterbeck, for instance, averages 29 more passes than the Palace captain per 90 minutes and while Guehi is averaging a 65.4 per cent aerial duel rate this season, that would only be the fourth-best of the Dortmund man’s career.

Liverpool can land a better player here if they go all-in on the German. We think it’s time to do just that.
