Liverpool's £130m disaster will COST them England star
Liverpool could now miss out on an England international and a £130m disaster is largely responsible. It's not too late, however.
Liverpool took an almighty gamble in the summer as they spent £130m on Alexander Isak. The gamble wasn't so much in who they were buying, though.
Because Isak is clearly a world-class striker. He was arguably the best in the Premier League last season, scoring all kinds of goals as he bagged 23. He had 21 the year before that.
So there can't be any question that Liverpool were buying an elite player and he is absolutely what the team needed to improve. If he was at his best.
But there was essentially zero chance that Isak would be at his best. The Swede didn't have a pre-season, instead deciding to go on strike at Newcastle United in order to force his transfer.
That meant he arrived at Liverpool unfit and unready to compete. Now, Isak's poor form is certainly not the primary reason for the Reds' awful start but the transfer does represent a missed opportunity to upgrade the squad for an immediate improvement.
While Liverpool wait for Isak to find his feet, they're struggling - and struggling more than if they had the player at his best. It's a situation that hurts and it might hurt even more if new reports are to be believed.
Liverpool to miss out on Marc Guehi
Liverpool tried to sign Marc Guehi right at the end of the transfer window. Crystal Palace collapsed the deal right at the last moment, however, and that left the Reds needing to try again in 2026.
But things are more complicated now. Guehi's contract expires at the end of the season, with a whole host of clubs hoping to snap him up.
The Athletic now reports that Guehi is likely to leave at the end of the season, rather than January. They also have this line in their report:
"It is anticipated he will end up joining one of those who are expected to challenge for the Champions League trophy."
Well, as things stand, Liverpool won't even be in the Champions League next season. The lack of any sort of decent form has them in the bottom half of the table, while the decision to spend enormously on a player who isn't ready to wholly contribute this season played a big role in that.
There is still time to turn things around, of course. But it's not looking good.
