Despite having Hugo Ekitike now in their ranks, the Reds are adamant they need another striker.

The club sold Darwin Nunez and the heartbreaking loss of Diogo Jota has meant that Liverpool are now a little light in the attacking areas, when did have six assets available to them last season.

Whether a versatile winger will be considered is unknown, and with so little time left in the transfer window, it feels unlikely that Liverpool will sign any other forwards now, since Alexander Isak is likely to remain at Newcastle until January at the very least. We'll have to adapt to being short-changed.

But when the opportunity comes around again to sign someone else, the Reds might have a few different options to consider, as one of their other main targets could be open to a move elsewhere.

Julian Alvarez could be an option

Liverpool heavily admired the Argentinian striker when he was at Manchester City and his move in 2024 to Atletico Madrid was a bit of a shock to the system, since he would have been perfect for us.

The Blues sold him for £64m plus £17m in add-ons, making a huge return on the £14m spent in 2022 to get him over from River Plate in Brazil to England, although his talents were showcased to the world in both his two Premier League seasons and the World Cup win. Alvarez is a special player.

Despite often playing behind Erling Haaland in the pecking order, he delivered 53 goal contributions in 103 appearances, with an attacking return coming every 114 minutes he spent on the pitch.

Since joining Atletico Madrid he has 30 goals and eight assists, which is impressive and he is still only 25 years old, making him one of the most renowned talents in the world, much like Isak.

Reports had suggested that Liverpool were keen to test the water with him this summer, even though he's contracted with the Spanish club until 2030, but nothing really came to fruition. We moved on.

However, an update on the Spanish TV network El Chiringuito TV, journalist Matias Palacios spoke about Alvarez and his perspective on how he is currently being utilised as one of the club's forwards.

On Tuesday night, he said: "The entourage of Julian Alvarez believe he may have made a mistake by signing with Atletico Madrid. Sources suggest Alvarez is frustrated with his current role under coach Diego Simeone."

The striker had occasionally been played alongside Alexander Sorloth in pre-season, with Antoine Griezmann getting the odd few minutes here and there. After scoring against Newcastle, Alvarez followed his form up with a goal in the opening game of the La Liga season in a loss to Espanyol.

Specifically what Alvarez is frustrated by is unknown, but Liverpool will certainly be keeping an eye on his situation over the next few months in case a second attempt at signing Isak falls apart.

Given how far down the line we are with the Swede now, it's difficult to envisage any other striker joining the Reds instead of him now, but anything's possible until an agreement is reached.

Alvarez's potential transfer would likely cost around £100m, but as we know, the money is there. We will just have to wait and see which player is available when the January transfer window opens.
