Liverpool are working a bluff to get Marc Guehi to Anfield. And it's going to work, too.

Liverpool went into the summer hoping to sign Marc Guehi. It was a stance they held for the entirety of said window, with a deal only collapsing at the very last minute.

The Reds actually had an agreement with Crystal Palace and Geuhi himself. A medical was done. Literally everything was sorted apart from the go-ahead from Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

He never relented on that stance and ultimately, chairman Steve Parish sided with his head coach. The Guehi deal was off with minutes to go and now the centre-back remains at Selhurst Park.

For now.

Guehi's contract is still expiring at the end of the season. Liverpool only tried to get a deal done in the summer because he was 'available' at a cut-price fee and the Reds wanted to sort out their future at centre-back early.

Reports, such as in the Telegraph, now suggest the stance has changed. Liverpool very much want to sign Guehi but will wait to grab him on a free, with no January offer going in.

Only, we don't believe that. We think it's a bluff - and one that will work.

The big Marc Guehi bluff

Liverpool were eager to sign Guehi in the summer. He was cheap and solved a problem for them - Ibrahima Konate's contract is expiring at the end of the season and here's an ideal replacement.

Not to mention that Guehi is one of the most likely stars capable of replacing Virgil van Dijk at some point. The Dutchman won't last forever, unfortunately, and someone must take on the impossible task eventually.

These 'problems' still exist in January, though. And Guehi will almost certainly be even cheaper - and that's ultimately why we see this as a bluff.

Palace want to get some sort of fee for Guehi in order to help fund a replacement. Otherwise they'll have to give that a go without any sort of income to soften the blow.

They're actually quite desperate for that money - hence them entertaining a sale at the window's end in the first place. Them being desperate works massively in Liverpool's favour.

It's how Liverpool get a deal done quickly and how they knock that price down as far as it can go. The teams are playing a game of chicken, with Glasner essentially winning it this summer.

But the Reds went into the summer with it being obvious that they wanted Guehi. Palace did just about lose their nerve at the end but they were willing to hold strong on their high asking price for 99 per cent of the window.

This time around? Liverpool aren't going to let them do that. They'll need to be far more open to a sale if they're to bring the Reds to the negotiating table and Guehi's preference to move to Anfield forces Palace to play Liverpool's game if they're to get this money.

As we say, the need for Geuhi still very much exists in January. The idea that Liverpool definitely won't move for him - or would prefer to wait for the season to end - feels like nonsense.

It's a bluff to finally get their way and it's almost certainly going to work.
