Liverpool's EXTRAORDINARY commitment to Mohammed Salah confirmed
At the end of last season, the Reds made a significant commitment to Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian was offered a new two-year contract, earning £400,000 a week, and he duly accepted it on April 10, agreeing to extend his stay on Merseyside to up to 10 years, if he sees the new deal out.
His prolonged stay in the side has come off the back of countless memorable performances, not least the efforts he put in during the title-winning campaign, breaking a Premier League record for goal contributions. It felt unimaginable that we'd simply let him go. He's integral to our success.
Salah's poor form this season has correlated with the team's underperformance as a whole, and Arne Slot's future as Liverpool head coach is now starting to be called into question. Given his age, it would be unsurprising if speculation arose about the right-winger as well. Although it's currently being reported that the Reds have set their stall out with him, making an extraordinary commitment.
Liverpool want Salah for as long as possible
It's been known for some time that Salah will need to join up with the Egyptian National team in December to help them in competing for the African Cup of Nations. The event happens every two years, and it's in the middle of the European football season. His absence is unavoidable.
However, it was previously understood that while he could've left on December 7, he wasn't going to be called upon until after the friendly match against Nigeria takes place on December 14. That would mean that Liverpool would have the 33-year-old available for their clash against Brighton.
According to Ismael Mahmoud at WinWin Sports, the national team manager Hossam Hassan is now going to start Egypt's preparation camp on December 1 instead, and FIFA is currently working out the exact date when the Reds and Manchester City will have to release Salah and Omar Marmoush.
In spite of the Egyptian Football Associations' (EFA) best wishes, for Salah and Marmoush to be available for the Nigeria clash, prior to the tournament starting, Liverpool and City are steadfast in their hopes of keeping them until after the December 13/14 weekend. Since the tournament begins on December 21, that's quite a bold ask, and it might be that FIFA decide to force the clubs' hands.
But the Reds' willingness to have Salah available on Merseyside for as long as possible is fascinating.
His five goals and three assists in 17 appearances perfectly illustrated what's going wrong for Slot's side right now. Hardly anyone is firing on all cylinders, which is compounding the miserable results.
Jamie Carragher has called for Salah to step up more for Liverpool and take responsibility for the disappointing form - which is currently eight losses in their last 11 games - and others feel that he should be benched for the time being. But Liverpool want him around as much as possible.
That level of commitment to him says a lot about the belief in him to turn things around. After all, the team might be without him until January 18, should Egypt go all the way to the AFCON final. That's a long time, and who knows where Liverpool could be by then. As such, the mood in camp is very much one of camaraderie. There is no willingness to be without Salah sooner than we have to be.
