Liverpool's CRAZY Mo Salah decision backed by new project
Liverpool made a truly crazy Mo Salah decision as they took a gigantic risk. A new study suggests they were absolutely right to do so.
Liverpool did something crazy earlier this year - they renewed Mo Salah’s contract. Now, we fully supported the decision and still do but it was absolutely not how the Reds typically operate.
Salah was given a renewal of his current contract, essentially. It retained his status as the best-played player at the club and one of the best-paid in European football.
That’s a massive statement over a player who turned 33 shortly after the deal was signed. Liverpool don’t typically renew players over 30 and yet here they were giving out a sensational amount to someone comfortably over that mark.
A new project by CIES Football Observatory is seeking to find out if these deals are worth it, though. And it’s certainly given Salah’s contract a strong backing.
Mo Salah's contract
The project by CIES looks into merit-based salary. In other words, it takes performances by players as well as how often they play and then weighs them against one another.
Forwards are deemed more valuable than other positions, adding extra weight to their salaries. The result is a list of what players ‘should’ be paid given their status in world football.
Kylian Mbappe tops the pile with a projected salary of €22.8m. He actually earns quite a bit more than that, however.
Second? Mo Salah. CIES feel he’s worth around €350k per week as a player, which is a little shy of what Liverpool pay him. Salah places just above Jude Bellingham, with Joao Neves and, notably, Dominik Szoboszlai following them.
But given Liverpool’s enormous risk earlier this year with Salah’s contract, this project suggests they were pretty much spot on with their eventual decision. Whether they do truly get the right value from his deal by the end of it is another matter - but the decision to give the Egyptian that salary did make sense.
Hopefully, it looks good in hindsight, too, but only time will tell.
