Liverpool uncertain over forward just MONTHS after striking deal
Liverpool struck a major deal with one of their forwards just months ago. Now they're left with serious uncertainty over his future.
Liverpool restructured their attack in the summer, spending enormously in an attempt to overhaul things. Alexander Isak was the headline, of course, arriving for a British-record transfer fee.
But he was far from the only expense. In fact, all of Liverpool's current attack signed deals in 2025. Florian Wirtz joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen for a then-club-record fee, while Hugo Ekitike was an expensive signing from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Rio Ngumoha signed professional terms, too, as he committed to Liverpool. Then there was Mo Salah's high-profile new contract back in April that retained his status as the best-paid player at the club.
And then there's Cody Gakpo. The Reds signed him to a new long-term contract back in August but now there are claims about serious doubts with the player.
Cody Gakpo's future
Journalist Romain Molina put out a YouTube video this week where he went over the 'behind the scenes' drama at Liverpool. He suggests all is not well at Anfield after a wild summer spend.
There's an interesting titbit in there about Gakpo, with Molina claiming that Liverpool are unsure he's actually a winger. That would be a normal observation to make if it wasn't the position in which they play him.
Both the management and the background staff supposedly think this way. They're unsure it's actually his position which really does beg a few questions.
Firstly, why would you re-sign a player to a long contract if you're unsure what his best position is? Even if you think he's brilliant in a different role, you haven't actually seen him in that role.
But also, why was Luis Diaz sold without a replacement if the only remaining senior winger on that side is someone you don't think is an ideal fit? That doesn't make any sense, does it?
Perhaps Molina has it wrong, though we're not sure he does. Jurgen Klopp certainly had doubts over Gakpo as a winger, while he didn't really play that role for PSV Eindhoven - he was far more of a playmaker who looked to step inside from the flank than run in behind.
One way to look at this, though, is that Liverpool may soon try something different. We'd certainly like to see a few stars in different roles, Gakpo among them.
