Liverpool given UNIQUE opportunity to sign Julian Alvarez
Liverpool have long admired Julian Alvarez.
The Argentina World Cup winner was on the club’s radar even as a young player back home with River Plate. But the forward opted for Manchester City when it came time to leave Buenos Aires - enjoying a successful but short spell at the Etihad.
In summer 2024 he swapped Manchester for Madrid - joining Atletico Madrid in a money-spinning deal worth up to £82m.
Alvarez’s first season under Diego Simeone was fruitful - scoring 29 goals and being named in La Liga’s team of the season.
Liverpool were again tentatively linked last year but ended up moving for Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike instead.
Owing to circumstances at Atleti this season however Liverpool may well get another chance to strike a deal for the 25-year-old.
Atletico reduce Alvarez asking price
Alvarez is off the boil this term - scoring only one league goal since September - and according to a report in Fichajes the club have revised his valuation downwards.
Once rated at around €150m Atletico would now compromise on that fee - and that could now lead Liverpool back to the table.
“At Atlético de Madrid's offices, Julián Álvarez's case is being closely monitored,” the report reads.
“This is not only due to his contributions on the pitch, but also to his financial value. Just a few months ago, several European clubs were prepared to offer figures close to €150 million to secure his services.
“That scenario has changed. The market is sensitive to current sporting form, and the value of a player of this caliber is directly linked to his performance.
“If the Argentine doesn't regain his best form in the short term, Atlético knows that their financial demands will have to be adjusted downwards.”
Liverpool should consider unique Alvarez opportunity
Under contract until 2030 Alvarez would no doubt still cost a pretty penny but he is a long-standing favourite of Reds’ recruiters - including FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards.
Liverpool have been left short up front this season owing to the serious injury suffered by Alexander Isak. Hugo Ekitike has been asked to step up in the meantime and has suffered fitness troubles of his own.
Therefore another option in the shape of Alvarez at No9 could be welcomed through the gates next summer. The timing may never be better.
