Liverpool disappointed after 19-year-old forward rejected new contract
Last week Liverpool sold promising forward Trent Kone-Doherty to Molde.
The Norwegian side struck a bargain €750k deal with the Premier League champions for the 19-year-old - who had been on the cusp of a first-team breakthrough at Anfield.
Ireland under-21 international Kone-Doherty had played twice for Arne Slot’s seniors - once in the 2024/25 campaign against Plymouth in the FA Cup and again this season in the EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace.
But Kone-Doherty was no doubt frustrated at being limited to outings in the Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League.
The young flyer accepted an offer to move on - with Liverpool claiming that the emergence of two young wingers eased the decision to let him go.
Liverpool disappointed at TKD exit
Rio Ngumoha, 17, and 15-year-old Joshua Abe have been namechecked in various reports as being ahead of TKD in the pecking order.
But those claims have been countered somewhat by the recent comments of U21 manager Rob Page.
According to the Welshman Liverpool were determined to keep Kone-Doherty - having invested a lot of time and energy into his development since arriving from Derry City in 2022.
The club even extended a new contract offer his way but the Irishman’s mind was made up.
Trent Kone-Doherty rejected new Liverpool deal
“We’ve lost a good player,” Page is reported to have said.
“In this job, you’re in it to develop players. He’s decided to move on. We wanted to keep him. There was an offer of a contract.
“So, disappointed to see him go, but that’s life. That’s development football. It gives others an opportunity now to step into his place, and we can focus on them.”
Liverpool have got worries over several young players in the wake of Kone-Doherty’s departure. While Ngumoha is contracted until 2028 it remains to be seen whether he gets significant first-team minutes.
Abe meanwhile has not yet signed the scholar terms on offer to him and is a target for Real Madrid and others.
And in the case of Keyrol Figueroa - also out of contract in summer 2026 - there is growing interest from PSV in the USA U20 striker.
