Things are not going well at present for Liverpool.

The defending Premier League champions are currently 12th in the table after enduring a run of six defeats in seven top-flight matches.

Arne Slot is reeling from that sequence of results - which has brought his future as head coach into question. The Dutchman has so far failed to find the formula for his existing squad players and £450m worth of new signings made in the summer transfer window.

The acquisitions of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and more were supposed to herald a new era for Liverpool. But instead the Anfield club look disjointed and error-prone at both ends of the pitch.

That has led to speculation that sporting director Richard Hughes may dip back into the market for yet MORE players in the January window.

Centre-back and winger on Liverpool's list

The Merseysiders look short at centre-back - especially since the loss of Giovanni Leoni due to a long-term injury.

And out wide improvements could be made. Cody Gakpo hasn’t always been at his impactful best this term while Mo Salah is below par and about to embark on a strenuous Afcon campaign.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Hughes and Slot have got two players in mind for these problem positions over winter.

We could see a move reactivated for Marc Guehi - the Crystal Palace captain who came so close to moving to Liverpool on deadline day.

And for the wing Plettenberg agrees with reports elsewhere that Antoine Semenyo could be the chosen one - with the Ghanaian boasting a £65m release clause.

Liverpool want a striker too

Intriguingly the German transfer expert also reckons that a new STRIKER could be at the forefront of Liverpool’s thoughts - provided the right conditions are met.

Hugo Ekitike has gone off the boil in recent weeks and it’s fair to say we are waiting for the best of injury-hit Alexander Isak.

Therefore Liverpool could strike if the price is right and we’ve seen reports linking the Reds to Champions League hotshot Serhou Guirassy.

Striker signing could indicate change of formation

“They are looking for a winger who can make an immediate impact, with Antoine #Semenyo among the candidates,” Plettenberg wrote on X.

“They are also monitoring strikers with favourable market conditions, and they have an eye on centre-backs as well, including Marc #Guehi.”

Liverpool already have two high-class No9s and perhaps the links with a new striker mean a change of shape is coming.

We could see Slot utilise a back-three formation which would then permit the champions to play a partnership up top.

Right now it’s all speculation but it’s clear to see that Liverpool are not happy with what they’ve got currently and could conduct some amendments in the coming weeks.
