Richard Hughes set to END Liverpool's three-year transfer chase
Liverpool often plan their future transfer endeavours years in advance, and while it might be a long time coming, the Reds often get their way eventually. A three-year chase is now set to end.
Through a concerted effort from the recruitment team in Merseyside, it's plausible that players that are being named in reports might stay on the club's radar for a while before a move takes place. It happened with Florian Wirtz in the summer and Virgil Van Dijk's signing is another classic example.
The reports surrounding Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez's potential move this January fit this pattern in one sense when you consider that he was on the Reds' shortlist of favoured talents back in 2024, but when you look a little deeper, the 21-year-old also fits another of the club's ambitions.
Liverpool to finally get their Ecuadorian
According to journalist Chobo Alvarez V. who works for ESPN in Ecuador, the talks for Liverpool to sign Ordonez is now in the 'key hours' with an offer of Β£35m plus Β£8m in bonuses being considered.
The young defender's arrival on Merseyside is set to have a grand repercussions when it comes to Ibrahima Konate's future as a Red and the overall long-term vision that Richard Hughes has in mind.
Signing a new centre-back this winter has been on the to-do list for a lot of fans, after the summer's new addition Giovanni Leoni pulled up with an ACL tear on his debut for the club, and at last it's looking like Liverpool are willing to indulge their fantasy of have a more defensively secure team.
But there's more significance to Ordonez's upcoming arrival. He's the first Ecuadorian we've signed.
The initial search came in 2023 when the Reds got tantalisingly close to signing Moises Caicedo, who joined Chelsea instead. The defensive midfielder is now seen as one of the best in the world.
After that fiasco, Arsenal's recent signing Pierro Hincapie was then targeted following the role he played in Bayer Leverkusen's Invincibles team. Once again, the club was unable to convince him.
However, the signing of Ordonez was buck that unfortunate trend when it comes to Ecuadorian's and the three-year chase for one of the South American teams' most exceptional talents will conclude.
Back in 2024, the defender was listed alongside Hincapie in a report from Rousing The Kop, in which the duo with Willian Pacho were named outstanding talents, and Liverpool will soon be able to boast their latest signing in front of the fans, if the deal gets across the line over the upcoming weeks.
